One of the many fantastic things about native plants is that they’re so much less work

Did I have to do the work of digging out the invasives? Sure. But native plants basically get rid of the need to mow or water

okay, what do I do with the Side Yard. I can't plant very much or dig any holes because all of the dangerous utility lines are here, so it's just a disaster of invasives and bits of plastic. what are people doing with their Side Yards

The fact that pollinators visit alien invasive plants is often used as an argument that they're actually okay. They're not.

Pollinators don't only need nectar, they need the native plants with which they evolved complex relationships, especially for larvae. These plants are pushed out by invasives.

Paulownia and Ailanthus are two trees that get a lot of bad press as "invasives" and "weeds." The truth is that they are often the only trees hardy enough to grow in urban areas, especially in poor parts of town that are never quite reached by urban forestry efforts. I admire these tough trees.

do you know what the invasives situation is with either? here in NYS the elms have mostly succumbed to Dutch elm disease (I take it they’re working on bringing back resistant varieties) and the ashes are walking dead because of emerald ash borer

This sounds like a great project. I do invasives removal (mostly the non-native honeysuckle) and seed harvest from my native plant gardening to seed a Missouri state park as well as do invasives removal.

As for helping... I'm a bio teacher, so bringing to light MD-specific invasives and trying to encourage my students to care about this sort of thing is my contribution. One of last year's students is doing a science fair project, trying to design a drone that IDs invasives and marks them. #ParkChat

Juhuuu… endlich.

if you are also considering rewilding parts or your entire lawn remember that grasslands NEED disturbance! rewilding doesnt mean just letting your yard grow, youll still need to remove invasives and its recommended to mow or burn every 1-2 years!

Loud music and beating the sht out of weeds, invasives and rocky dirt (I'm in AZ high desert, so gardening is often a bloody but ultimately satisfying battle)

Then, ALL the treats you can muster the weary body to make

When the anxiety reappears, bc it always does, it will be much less intimidating

Worked nonstop from 10-5 and got most of my planting done. Was cruising until i got to the part where i had to battle a section of invasives with my pickaxe before sheet mulching and cutting lil windows to add plants. Loads of work but hopefully this week’s rain helps it all settle in.
