Well, it’s official, and I’ve told my chair, so I can say it out loud: starting this summer I’ll be returning “home.”

Dream of all dreams, I’ve been hired as an Associate Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Wyoming!

I am all for showing the tech in geophysics and photogrammetry, but the AI was unnecessary.

Oh, I didn’t mean sand per se, just basalt is widely varied and all over the place (listening to Turning to Stone; she just said that). I thought about majoring in geophysics for one semester (geo survey class turned me way on) but didn’t have the physics/Kem confidence

Uh... What's going on?

Can't recall EarthScope "reminding" us to submit proposals to NSF before.

The Keevil Family are Great Canadian Builders

Dr. Norman Keevil Sr, born on a Saskatchewan farm, became an expert in geophysics. He pioneered airborne magnetic surveying technology and started Teck Resources, a successful mining company.

Lovely to meet Anne & Martin Roseveare of Tiger Geo doing geophysics out at Four Crosses, Powys ahead of possible development. We have been communicating for nearly 30 years on various planning driven projects but never met. They might prove a ring ditch burial I have suspected for years out here.

But in practice, we geochemists often consider ourselves to be and are trained as geologists; geophysics, definitely not as much. Maybe it's because some big geophysics bachelors degree programs are completely separate student tracks, rather than a couple specialist electives in a geology degree.

Live post the NAS's "Emerging Quantitative Methods in Geophysics" thing?

Why not.

Stand by for science....

In the UK, near-surface geophysics comes under the purview of the Geological Society of London where as solid-earth geophysics comes under the Royal Astronomical Society. Costs me a bloody fortune in fellowship fees every year being a fellow of both.
January 16, 2026 at 12:38 AM
And I know a ton of geophysicists who basically have NO geology background! Many get their undergraduate degrees in physics, math, or engineering and then make the jump to geophysics later. I know several brilliant geophysicists who wouldn't know a rock if you hit them with one. 😆
January 15, 2026 at 11:22 PM
Depends on background I think. My degree was geology but doctorate in geophysics. My PhD advisor was from a physics background. He wouldn’t consider himself a geologist but I do consider myself one.
January 16, 2026 at 12:28 AM
I always thought geophysics was part of the same umbrella. They were the same department and degree at the schools I went to

Q: Are we too small of a group to interest vendors in helping?
A: Solid earth geophysics might be too small, but weather isn't. Both are solving partial differential equations, so what's developed for weather can be brought into our field. (speaker not ID in zoom.)
