its this weird thing where the recent surge in meme usage started as a joke because of the shift away from yaoi to geikomi, and so some of us westerners with the prereq bg knowledge started to use it ironically, as a joke pointing specifically to it not being correct/current.

im unsure for yuri because that's sort of outside my sphere, but BL and geikomi (gay comics) are the most common terms in japan. geikomi is nice bc afaik it also encompasses bara where BL does not.

I remember when yaoi used to have a very specific meaning within bl. I never really liked yaoi in its original meaning, I was a geikomi guy
