Occurs to me that one aspect of British culture that’s not obvious to outsiders is that in Britain “freemasonry” is mostly understood as a synonym for “police corruption“

I am happy to see some good old-fashioned conspiracy theorizing about Freemasonry. Seems almost wholesome.

every investigation has collapsed and no one's ever been prosecuted. inquiry didn't find evidence that freemasonry was responsible but a *lot* of the officers involved were masons and it's been pretty corrosive of public trust

I wonder if it's Continental conservatism creeping into the international Right Wing Fever Dream. Freemasonry seems to have been a big concern in French Right Wing circles at least until the 70s or 80s. Dunno about now, but they seem to be bringing back all sorts of weird hatreds.
