Honestly not sure where to start with this one.

If it were steel works we would have a government bailout plan, yet losing thousands of jobs at unis is met with a shrug. & unlike steelworks universities were profitable when they had foreign students.
You are killing the golden goose… one of our best exports…

HOW IS THIS HELPING GROWTH?!
Every sympathy for University of Essex (and pressures facing them) but this is very bad news for Southend.

Bad faith attacks on the BBC reaching new levels here. A fascinating couple of threads here
This is the first History Reclaimed attack on @davidolusoga.bsky.social’s BBC Empire series, in The Spectator. The thread on its recycled Telegraph version shows how criticisms of the representation of Mike Mountain Horse and the invasion of Ijebu are based on untruths. But else do they argue?

This bit is especially stupid, but highlights something I think is pretty unique to history. Is there another academic subject to which such emotional attachment is applied? Not just superceding facts, but the whole idea it's about judging good & evil in the past.

1. They didn’t bother to watch it all because they knew how they were going to attack it regardless. Maybe no one will pick up in the fact that it doesn’t actually end with WWI but extends into the 1950s.

1/5 It was entirely predictable that The Telegraph would jump on @DavidOlusoga’s Empire series to fight its right wing culture war for control of our public history. Let’s see what they’ve done:

No surprise there. Yet Putin can't win, militarily. He needs Trump and the leaders of Europe to be incredibly stupid to avoid falling out a window

Set a maximum impact per square centimetre for cars. The bigger your car frontage the slower it can go.

Set a minimum distance for the driver to be able to spot a child in front of them.

This story about discrimination against university students is illustrated by a door I often used to get to lectures. I must admit, as joiner's son I did sometimes find aspects of university life a bit pretentious. But I really enjoyed my four years at @glasgow.ac.uk. How will unis respond to this?
Top universities across the country consistently advertise their commitments to equality, fairness and ending discrimination. So, it’s absurd that a deep-rooted stigma about working-class accents continues to pervade our campuses, writes Grace Galvin ✍️
