And there's no good genre language for "boardless board game", I know, but this "they're trying to force me to play things that don't even have roleplaying" is, I think, at the root of every mean-spirited "FishBlade" joke.

the thing about fishblade is that everyone wants to be the fishblade. it just appeals to some innate part of the human psyche. some part of us is still a fish, y'know. deep down. and that part want a turn holding the knife

Draw Steel is the solution to the FishBlade problem. It knows you want to fight monsters. It just wants it to be fun instead of kind of a pain.

I saw someone compare the fishblade joke to the "Eastern European Film about (insert long rambling description)" joke, and it's like... there is a legit argument that the latter joke is Xenophobic, while the former is at best annoying and at worst gentle poking, I do not think they are comparible.

It's literally just this image over and over except people get incredibly irate when they don't ditch D&D for whatever weird indie game they're into currently

16) We need a dictionary of game terms so we have a language to talk about some of this game design stuff. The "FishBlade" joke was a godsend because it defined a very specific type of indie game. we don't have terms for a lot of stuff, like...

8) I feel like some games are complicated just to justify a $50 core rulebook. Mechanics added to make find more complex so it doesn't feel like a Fishblade style indie game even if the theme doesn't need anything that crunchy.

5) Indie RPGs that have almost no rules to them and are incredibly myopic in their theme like the FishBlade joke annoy the piss out of me because I just cannot see the point or any replayability. It hits that same nerve as hipsters talking about IPAs. You cannot actually enjoy this shit, can you?

44. As much as I love when we all go in on a good joke (Fishblade), I do think we have a tendency to double down and not welcome newcomers/the confused/the curious into the circle to have fun as well.

Fish Blade - Troubled Waters, by Joe Kiewra, is a fun little hack for the Fishblade Jam, a game jam inspired out of spite and pettiness - excellent motivations, if you ask me. Attempt to succeed on a mission for the Queen of the Sea while wrestling with treachery and worse.

Someone once asked me if Fishblade was a good TTRPG. I said yes, I made it myself, and so did everyone else.
