I wouldn't assume people don't know/like/accept that as the intended profile. See also Red Hook (diacetyl), Rolling Rock (DMS), Heineken (Light Struck), and every poorly made "Belgian" beer made by and American Craft Brewery

For over a century, chemists have made flavor molecules to evoke particular tastes. How do they know which compounds create a particular flavor, and how do they make these molecules? cen.acs.org/food/food-sc...

All the best Spoopy, but vitamine E acetate (VEA) caused "EVALI" six years ago (almost entirely in the USA). 68 deaths. VEA was a cutting agent used by some bootleg THC vape oil dealers to stretch their product.

"Popcorn Lung" is caused by diacetyl, which almost no nicotine vapes contain.

Diacetyl is the main culprit for popcorn lung, but none of the additives are good for the old air bags.

They almost certainly use diacetyl to flavour those, which is a really common off flavour in beer. Buttered popcorn is not a good beer taste though.

For those of you playing along, diacetyl is a byproduct of malolactic conversion in white wines, most notably Chardonnay. If you’ve ever had a Rombauer Chardonnay, you’ve drunk down a good amount of diacetyl. It’s also copiously in microwave and movie theater popcorn, for the “artificial butter”.

Chronic inhalation exposure to diacetyl fumes is a causative agent of the lung disease bronchiolitis obliterans, commonly known as "popcorn lung".

Jesus Christ, they named that one a bit on the nose, twice!

Eh, I just remembered a close friend died when they brought in Fentanyl. I was never too much for opioids, anything but morphine and diacetyl morphine I didn't like even when I still used stuff.

The problem remains domestic. Precursors get brought over and are mass produced.

We interviewed the Deputy Brewmaster from Budvar! He has interesting theories about decoction mashing, whole leaf hops, diacetyl and many other things. Czech this out!

Like (most?) Czechs, I am diacetyl-agnostic. A big part of that is balance, though, and I just couldn’t imagine a way for a 3%, sharply-bitter beer to harmonize with diacetyl. But I’ve been wrong enough I was just wondering about it.

I was pretty surprised (pleasantly) that I didn't pick up any diacetyl in any of the beers I drank in Prague or Pilsen this summer.

Not sure if it’s an issue. Diacetyl isn’t present in every Czech beer; although it’s not considered a big fault, plenty of Czech lagers don’t have it, and yet are still balanced. (In the VinePair piece, Gordon Strong suggests diacetyl as a possibility, but I don’t see it working in this style.)

How many of these “summer” lagers contain diacetyl? I’m curious whether that’s a common component or an outlier.
