I don’t really understand why no click hunting columnist isn’t just stating the obvious - Connolly’s landslide victory explains the general malaise in turnout. She was the best candidate by a country mile so many just stayed at home to let it play out. Opinion poles found this weeks ago.

✨Interesting how the Media claims that their were a "huge number of spoiled votes", claiming that Connolly won because "no one turned out" for the election. That is total rubbish. Connolly's rival, Humphrey only got 29% of the votes, Connolly got 63% and their were only 13% "spoiled votes"

A left wing landslide. We discuss Catherine Connolly's victory in Ireland's presidential election. Could the united left strategy work in a general election?

Draw your own conclusions on how much Catherine Connolly coordinates with Kremlin propagandists Clare Daly and Mick Wallace in support of Russia.
Don't forget, Clare Daly, Connolly's nominee for president, claimed Russia's preparations for its full scale invasion of Ukraine were "defensive".

Really interesting piece on the 26-year-old designer behind Catherine Connolly's distinctive visual branding.

Catherine Connolly’s landslide shakes Ireland’s establishment – but not its politics
Connolly’s stunning victory humbles old parties and energises the left, yet it’s no revolution: the presidency remains symbolic

The establishment and their buddies in the media are naturally more interested in focusing on the things that went wrong in the FF and FG campaigns, thereby creating the pretence that this explains Connolly's high FP vote. The reality is that the establishment is terrified of Connolly's strengths.

Just FYI, the head of our government is the Taoiseach (Prime Minister), not the President. The presidency is largely ceremonial. That said, I do think that Connolly's election is powerfully symbolic. (Fun fact: Connolly will be the 10th person and the 3rd woman to serve as President of Ireland!)

Frankenstein's monster?
Not sure how that actually works but isn't the wearing coats backwards and pretending to be the monster in Billy Connolly's Coats on the Bed thing?

For those interested in the work of Aoife Cawley, who designed the scarf for Catherine Connolly's campaign, I interviewed her last year for the Irish Times.
At the time, she had just finished her degree show at the University of Dundee.

Aoife Cawley: ‘I hope to make a living from all this weird art about saints. It’s bold, bright, crazy, funny’
What’s Next For?: Being introduced to the work of Harry Clarke led her on to iconography. ‘It’s all very bling’

Ms Connolly’s campaign inspired 15,000 volunteers to help get her elected. She got the highest percentage of votes in any Presidential election we’ve had. The turnout was about the same for this election as for others.
