Opinion: a bit-precise data mutation model (CRDT) is the difference between the “amnesic computing” we now see and the “autonomous computing” we (may) want.

I’ve been thinking about this too!

ATProto records seem pretty well structured for a CRDT type setup between your pocket PDS and your networked PDS; one (or more!) for writing to while you’re without network, one for others to grab your sync’d posts from.

made a small demo building a multiplayer editor using loro crdt, zero sync engine and cloudflare durable object over the holiday. never got the chance to do this sort of thing at Quip. lots of fun😊

it's also how agents interact with files. CRDT backend enables some nice file editing via syncing between agent doc, shadow doc, and disk. this handles at least some edit conflicts gracefully and handles simultaneous work on different sections of a file well.

syntactically-correct merges that fall outside of application schemas are the bane of every CRDT protocol, yeah. But honestly, it feels like LLMs would be pretty decent at giving you suggestions if the data is itself fairly text-y (like automerge's JSON)

#1 refers more to online querying, but yeah, kind of. #2 is a gigantic shitshow. maybe somebody someday will make a decent way to do CRDT memories in git and not turn into merge hell, but I haven't seen it

Reading the issue queue is funny too.

"Would you consider using a CRDT?"
"Why? Are you having actual problems in prod"
"No but it's better"
"Closing"

If I could introduce one distributed systems concept to modern devs to rid them of the idea that method calls are all DS frameworks should enable, it'd be:

- distributed objects and
- decentralised merging à la OT/CRDT

If I could introduce two DS concepts it'd be eventual consistency in counting.

2025 was huge at @peergos.org. Here's everything we achieved: peergos.org/posts/2025

Highlights:
* desktop and Android apps
* sync
* post-quantum encryption
* migration support in the PDS UI
* quic
* shared-with page
* moving closer to a CRDT
There are over 400 self hosted servers now!
Thank you 💚
2025 - What a year!

i have wanted to make a CRDT based todo app which is like, somewhat overlapping, but research has consumed life for ... months to years now depending how look at it

Ok so I might have a problem

I mean, once you have 128 bits you have a lot of things

A counter for instance

CRDT friendly so you can do uh... Datadog globally distributed?

Or geese or summin I dunno

Hey... what's that queue doing in my DNS?

[seems we may have a small encoding issue, but not bad for go the first]

dreamed i put my wife in a crdt
December 18, 2025 at 5:21 PM
yep! yjs crdt is what the whole sync is built around so it would be a harder task to replace that

How today's adventure into Yjs, CRDT, and other collaborative editing topics is going

Part of what I’m pondering is what’a possible with doing everything locally using CRDT and WASM. It’s a little ambitious, but feels like it’s *just* possible to do something amazing there. (And then being eventually-consistent to a central service, probably.)

RIBLT is particularly brain melting; these are not like that but are a few that I've enjoyed the last while:

* DBSP arxiv.org/pdf/2203.16684
