Our @thegreatwargroup.bsky.social conference is a month away! With many talks and seminars to choose from. From the Royal Logistics Corps Museum, Samantha Jolley is going to be telling us all about tank drivers from the Army Service Corps!

Yes....I was fascinated by him too, dad was a huge fan of the Lean movie and that was what got us kids interested. But when older, I got more intrigued by his life at Clouds Hill when serving at Bovington.

Yeah, my grandfather came over in 1936 from Newfoundland and joined up at Newport, spent WWII at Bovington because he was a regular and a tank trainer. Used to get the train home to his wife in Boscombe and catch the milk train back to Wool until he was put on a charge for it!

Was recently at the Ashmolean in Oxford: definitely one of the best UK museums IMHO.

Someone else mentioned it, but at least part of the issue is unsuitable buildings for modern curation.

I will give a shout/out for the Tank Museum in Bovington I visited yesterday: tanks ARE art aren’t they? 👀🫡

Seeing the tanks on show has reminded me that one of the few downsides to my marriage is that my wife's birthday perpetually coincides with Bovington Tank museum's TankFest weekend and she's made it clear that would not count as a "romantic trip".

"War in France and Flanders 1939-1940" by L.F. Ellis would be a good start...
I would also suggest asking Bovington.
Maybe you think that The École de guerre-Terre has a better understanding of the British army than Sandhurst or the IWM?

A second prototype of the Assault Tank T14 arrived at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds #OTD in 1943. It showed just as many issues as the first one and was eventually forwarded to the British. This tank is now a part of the tank collection at Bovington. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

But it was certainly no beauty queen.

While other tanks - e.g. the T-34 & Crusader - cleverly used angled armour, the Tiger I looked like it was brutally sculpted from a couple of large blocks of cheap margarine.

As for its hideous, snub-nosed bastard son, the Sturmtiger, ugh...

Bovington is a fabulous museum, but it's sold it soul to the wehraboos

Who wouldn't want some comfy slippers shaped like a Nazi death machine built by slave labour?

So, IIRC, the oldest surviving Sherman today is the very early M4A1 "Michael" at Bovington, right?

I've used it three times - Bovington Tank Museum, Portsmouth Royal Dockyards, and London Transport Museum in my limited use of GiftAid.
