#DYK that hidden beneath the waves of UK seas were once oyster reefs covering an area the size of Ireland?

Habitat loss & pollution led to a 95% decline in stocks. But restoration projects are bringing these biogenic ocean habitats back from the brink 🦪

‘Once upon a time they covered an area the size of Ireland’: The restoration of Britain’s native oyster reefs is shaping future marine projects around the world
Jane Wheatley reports on an innovative project to restore Britain’s once plentiful native oyster reefs in Tyne & Wear.

Ngl, when the social worker at the hospital told me that they got all of their food service from Morton's Gourmet Market (think $60 "biogenic" watermelons), I immediately knew that this place was WELL outside of what his insurance would care to cover. Good. Let's see what we can do for Beeb now.

We've written a blog about our new paper! 🔎If you want to find out about net-zero aligned afforestation in the UK and how this might impact future biogenic emissions in a warmer climate, check out the summary blog @leedsleaf.bsky.social🌳☁️🌍
Increasing woodland cover to 19% to help reach net-zero could change the biogenic emissions from UK woodlands. @treeswithhazel.bsky.social’s latest research shows the potential scale of change by 2050 associated with different tree species mixes.

New paper on what drives organic aerosol in NY - anthropogenic chemicals have emerged as 2x traffic sources, while wildfire smoke is persistent and substantial - and we see evidence that it enhances biogenic SOA.
Out this week in npj Climate and Atmospheric Science: VCPs, biogenic VOCs and traditional anthropogenic PM respond to heat and smoke to drive summer PM pollution outside NYC, highlighting vulnerabilities of urban air quality under global change. @chemdelphine.bsky.social @dbm.bsky.social

Did I mention that the biogenic carbon in this chest was stored for almost 300 years and it's not getting released any time soon?
It's because it was beautifully made, useful, repairable and designed to withstand the conditions. Air can circulate around or you cant open it.(!)

as Simon Cole shows in this classic & fun article, the biogenic theory of oil was still controversial enough even in the 1990s to underwrite quite expensive attempts to provide evidence for abiogenic theory:

Which Came First, the Fossil or the Fuel? - Simon A. Cole, 1996
This paper chronicles a challenge to the conventional theory of petroleum generation mounted by astro- and geophysicist Thomas Gold. Beginning in the late 1970s...
