While approximately 45% of Oregon’s coastline is flat, the amount of dunes have been receding by about 5 feet per year due to invasive plants and the nitrogen they add to the soil. First beachgrass thrives, and then shrubs, willows and wetlands take hold; finally forests of Shore Pines grow.

The free beachgrass is for people who own beach front property and will be handed out in February.
Ocean City handing out free beachgrass plugs to help protect dunes
The plugs come at no cost to those who apply, but those who apply need to plant the grasses. It's recommended that planting happen when you pick up the beachgrass, within a few days at the latest.
