I havent cried like this over the death of someone I only ever watched on tv/or read since tony bourdain and it's odd that it's also over a chef. but maybe not so odd when I think abt food and what it means to me and the power of human connection thru it. I never met her but she helped me get thru an absolutely brutal time in my life. trying to pick up the pieces. learning how to cook helped me start to feel like I was worthwhile

Her weapons were so unusual and must have required so much practice. I could not judge her except by the corpses she left behind. The three of us were surprisingly dangerous. Then there was Veng. I had witnessed it easily dispatch the formless, but seeing Veng loosed against people was terrifying. The towering construct was covered in blood when the battle ended. Limbs and heads lay strewn about. I can still see one of the corpses to this day, cleft in two diagonally from the neck to the groin. The wound was burned by the heat of the ax’s flames. Veng’s speed, its strength, badly outstripped us. After the initial shock, trying to sleep that night, all I thought was that with Veng we were unstoppable. I never really got used to seeing Veng kill. It was brutal. Not sadistic, but efficient and powerful. It was difficult not to be afraid of it, but eventually I at least adapted to that.
