This is the Bucklersbury Pavement, a Roman mosaic found in 1869 during construction of Queen Victoria Street in the City of London. Dating to around 200-250 CE, it was later exhibited in the old Museum of London (and will hopefully feature in the new @londonmuseum.bsky.social too!) #MosaicMonday

Looking up at a curved ceiling that is decorated with a mosaic. The mosaic shows some people treading grapes in two opposing corners and a cart of grapes in the other corners. There is a female bust in the centre. Much of the rest of the design is taken up with scrolling vines.

Said to be from Populonia, in Tuscany, this mosaic emblema was probably part of the floor of a triclinium, a dining room, of a patrician villa. That lobster is magnificent. 🏺 #mosaicmonday 1/

This mosaic emblema features edible sealife from the Mediterranean, exactly what a patrician household could expect to serve to guests for dinner. Therefore, although its findspot isn't exactly known, it almost certainly graced the floor of a Roman villa's <i>triclinium</i> or dining room. There’s a giant lobster, upside down, with a white octopus, a moray eel, and several varieties of fish against a background of black tesserae. Roman, ca. 100 CE. Said to be from Populonia, Tuscany, near Rome. British Museum, London (1989,0322.1)

BRITISH MUSEUM Here we see a detail of a fragmentary floor discovered in 1857 in Roman Carthage, the shipping hub of North Africa in the late western empire. At the corners of the floor are representations of the seasons: here we see Summer wreathed with grain, her large-eyed beautiful face modelled with subtle shading. She's glancing leftward and is wearing earrings and a gold necklace, a tunic with a gold stripe on the shoulder, and a red stola over her shoulders. A wonderful ribbon frame surrounds two sides of this detail. Springing upward toward the centre of the floor is a leafy stalk, and to either side acanthus leaves curl against a white background.

from the #Villa Selene ("House of the #Moon"), at the mouth of the Wadi Yala close to modern #Homs, is best known for its splendid #mosaics. It is believed that its #ancient name can still be recognized in the name of a modern village, which is called Silin.

The villa consisted of several independent parts: an atrium house that might as well have stood in Italy (indicated on the map in green); here, one could find a library and the winter triclinium (dining room); an expansion surrounding a peristyle (garden with colonnade), where one could also find the summer triclinium (grey); several garden structures (red), a bathhouse (blue). The various elements were connected by a magnificent portico with mosaics. To build it, a part of the atrium house had to be leveled. The complex appears to have been created in the second century CE but the atrium part must have been older. The portico surrounding the peristyle was decorated with mosaics that show beautiful geometric figures. The photo to the right shows is the southeastern ambulatory. The southwestern part, which is in front of the summer triclinium, was decorated with Nilotic figures. We can see a fierce-looking crocodile, some vegetation, and pygmies fighting against ibises The little men are dressed like gladiators, but instead of helmets, they have a flower, and instead of a shield, a broken amphora. This was a common motif in ancient art, that can also be found in theVilla Dar Buc Ammera., and the Villa of Neptune Mosaic in Italica, Spain.
