the “multiverse” stuff in quantum computing coverage is of course migraine-inducing to experts but partly because it is a little embarrassing that 100 years on we’re still not entirely sure what is going on down there

This is a great thread on the incredible weight of elite institutions in the world. How much talent does the world miss out on through this reproduction of privilege?
Fascinating paper on where 6000 global elites went to college. Billionaires, CEOs, heads of state, central bankers, etc.

In a word: Harvard.

Fully 10% of global elites went to Harvard. Elite US schools are over-represented (23% IvyPlus), but nobody comes close to Harvard.

just saw a paper claiming that it was about “Healthcare 5.0” and I wonder if there was an archive of patch notes somewhere? I think I may be a few versions behind

one thing that’s always interested me is how much more diverse astro is than physics (at institutions I’ve been at at least). Really good example of how culture sets these parameters rather than anything innate to the subject.

Anyway whole thread here is good!
What surprised me the most was how *early* these divergences by STEM fields emerge.

By age 6, kids already see girls as worse at computer science and engineering. But...there's no early male bias for math. (I made this graph for a broader audience).

Six-year-olds have quite nuanced beliefs!

The babies you meet today are likely to be alive in 2100.

Taking bold actions, today, to limit the catastrophes they (and their children and grandchildren) will face, then—that isn't some crazy altruistic futurism exercise, it's the most basic test of a functioning civilization.

Perhaps my own bias being a natural pessimist, but it seems to me many people, including prominent political pundits, just cant handle the idea that terrible big things happen to society at random, with no one directly and simply at fault.
"Wuhan lab samples hold no close relatives to virus behind COVID"

That should settle it, right? The problem, of course, it won't because we're dealing with conspiracy theories and not scientific inquiry - no amount of additional data will change un-evidenced beliefs.

honestly the idea they have come out the gate and they’re like “idea #1: veteran’s healthcare” has me feeling better about the likely impact of this whole exercise
Musk and Ramaswamy have already identified $516B dollars in government savings — it includes cutting all of Veteran’s Affairs health care, eliminating the NIH, and ending funding for federal prisons. @morningjoe-msnbc.bsky.social

one thing about the OG Omelas that’s more interesting than the moral dilemma everyone thinks of is how much it focuses on whether you, the reader, would find a description of utopia believable if it DIDN’T have a horrible secret
gosh, EVERYBODY has written an omelas take. i just found out that even ursula le guin wrote one!
