Depressing to realize that all the generations of Americans cynically muttering "those crooked bums are all the same" were right more often than they were wrong.

More National Book Award-winning writers need to spend the later portion of their careers picking one billionaire and just absolutely going to town.

They killed an identical deal on Thursday because too many people were paying attention.
You can tell that Senate Democrats know they made an awesome deal because they sprang it on us on a Sunday afternoon and then raced it through that same night.

A month of American suffering, a massive win for authoritarian party, and the prize Senate Democrats won in the end is that instead of having 1 signature accomplishment of 21st century legislation, they can knock the ticker back down to 0.
Great news, everybody! The ACA is materially undermined, no concessions were secured on any other front, and Donald Trump will be able to declare this a personal win. But poor people did starve for about a week there, so there's that.
The Senate has decided the HSA idea from Trump is a win and they're going to do it.

My read: Democrats used the shutdown as a short-term boost before an election, after which they could go ahead and give in. It was a cynical, political move, and whether you think that’s good or bad is up to you.
Important to understand this. There's a reasonable chance that your Dem Senator who voted against it and is acting mad now was in on the play. It's the same reason why they scheduled the surrender for AFTER the election this week. They didn't want people pissed at Dems right before an election.
The caucus meeting was just to orchestrate who would fall on the sword but not be up for a vote in 2026.

My extremely offline boomer dad called me on his way back from kayaking just to shout “they fucking caved?”
Once this shit filters down from the high info parts of online libs it'll just be "The Dems caved. We have to vote them all out"
This is why this is terrible even if you will never ever ever hand it to your posting enemies on here

Actually makes total sense that a guy who voted for Cuomo would want to kill all the momentum from last Tuesday.
Anyway, call Schumer and yell at him, no matter where you live. It feels great.

5/ Whether Republicans secure enough Democratic votes is NOT the only question here. It’s critical that if 7 or 8 mods vote with the gop to end this that the rest of the caucus vote the right way and make clear they think this was the wrong decision. If they don’t then “the Democrats” own this …

I think this is right. Democrats can't stop the moderate-conservative wing from folding if they're set on it. But making surrender look like a bipartisan deal would be criminally bad politics on top of everything else.
I think if senate mods want to break, they will break, but it's really important they do it without cover from the caucus or leadership

Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.

Look, at the point when your game of dress-up results in a month-long mystery around a robbery at the Louvre, I think it’s fair to say you’ve made your dream come true
Loving today's news that the mysterious "fedora man" outside the Louvre heist was actually a 15-year-old museum visitor who dresses like a 1940s French detective all the time, just because. apnews.com/article/louv...
Fedora man unmasked: Meet the teen behind the Louvre mystery photo
Fifteen-year-old Pedro Elias Garzon Delvaux has become an internet sensation after an Associated Press photo captured him outside the Louvre on the day of a crown jewels heist.

Apparently there’s a kitschy retro 90’s coffee shop opening in my neighborhood that will be selling bubble tea on a menu with Blockbuster Video fonts, and I think this is how Rutger Hauer felt in Blade Runner when he decided it was time to die

If you read in a history book about a dictator in failing health who cut off money and food supplies from his people, attacked them with violent gendarmes, seemed oblivious to a national public outburst of anger in local elections, and wiled away the days building vast palaces, what would you think

BREAKING: DOJ goes to SCOTUS trying to stop a district court order that USDA pay out full SNAP benefits this month.
The First Circuit denied an administrative stay, but has not yet ruled on the stay request. And, CNN reported that USDA is already processing payments.
DOJ went to SCOTUS anyway.

Thinking about our current historical predicament in the context of this paragraph from Leonard Schapiro about the Soviet Union: "Nothing shakes the stability of an autocratic regime more profoundly than the moment when it becomes apparent that it is willing to make concessions to popular demand."
