Curiously, I haven't seen boomers complaining about the loss of 200 car parks on Vivian St..

Wellington's failure to build an obviously needed upgrade to its dilapidated main streets is a damning and demonstrative example of a capital city self-immolating through incompetence and political cowardice.

The conservative minority on Wellington City Council never had the votes to kill the Golden Mile, so instead they played for time, demanding more reviews and consultation to delay it until a conservative won the mayoralty. Andrew Little has played right into their hands.

It cost Casey Costello $4500 to hire a room to meet with Irish anti-trans activist Helen Joyce. $1000 for a council social event to unveil a painting is peanuts & much more positive bc it involves sthg tangible (painting) & supports a local artist.

Greens, socialists and other leftist opponents of zoning liberalisation insist on big spending on social housing instead.
Their mistake is viewing upzoning as an alternative to social housing.
No, it is a precondition.

The fact that people are allowed to store their cars in the street is really weird - after all, a car is an individual's own private property and their responsibility. I can't think of a single other item you can store in public in this way.

It won’t be the big story today and I am not the big winner, but so proud of my team. Even with a shift to a different party, we won 1386 more first preferences than last election. All without saying a bad word against anyone. Thank you 💚

Mums and dad's across NZ already own the assets when they're in public ownership
I remember when asset sales were gonna lead to mum and dad shareholders and now we just have mum and dad paying $500 power bills in the winter. The right wing ideology is a scam. It’s a pyramid scheme. It’s useless. It improves nothing.

NZ city life too.
Motonormativity in action: my city's main hospital has been built miles outside the city, up by a motorway junction. You want to get there but you can't drive? Tough, your time has no value

I want to emphasise the importance of anyone with a progressive or even a fair-minded bone in their body in the Wharangi Onslow-Western ward giving me their first preference. Please hit up friends in Karori, Ngaio, Wilton, Northland, Wadestown, Khandallah etc to check they voted

You know, when you really think about it, does all that driving and car dependency really make sense? @adamconover.net weighed in.

Imagine if this was a story about how the motorway system hadnt been built in Auckland, and how the central city and suburbs like Newton, western springs, Newmarket, Greenlane weren't destroyed

Better Wellington were aggressive and abusive toward Rebecca. An audience member said many there felt unsafe.

This abuse is no longer limited to the internet and why I haven't attended these events. Imagine a council dominated by BW and Independent Together. We can't let this happen. #nzpol
Better Wellington turned out in force for the Khandallah Meet the Candidates . Results as you would expect.

Hard out
People attack Rebecca because she actually gets shit done, she’s across all the issues and a formidable Councillor. Everyone should be telling their friends that live in the Western Ward that their only good option is #1 Rebecca Matthews
A couple of people have shared a disgusting post Better Wellington have made about me today. Three things: I will never attack my colleagues or anyone like they do, I am sad that others think it’s ok, and I have no intention of backing down on my work for the city and our people

Ironically the Regulatory Takings clause in the proposed Planning Act would enable developers to sue the arse off Seymour for denying them the enjoyment of property rights
Here’s my Pick n’ Mixes hot off the virtual presses: David Seymour to campaign to block Chris Bishop's up-zoning of inner-city Auckland, including Epsom; "This plan is not necessary, and will have negative unintended consequences," he says #nzpol. thekaka.substack.com/p/libertaria...

Crazy seeing roads in Wellington's city suburbs jammed with cars and owners only having to pay $300 per year for a permit. So much inner city public road space taken up for private use to the detriment of public transport, cycling etc, but very little incentive for car owners to change
And Parking Minimums never need to return to ANY planning documents either.
The US is fast removing them, EU and Japan already banished them

What is missing is the second half of the policy
The Japan Policy
NO ON STREET PARKING nor can you own a car unless you can prove it can be stored off street

What does it take to move 1000 people? Better infrastructure supporting mobility choices that don’t take up so much space (or produce so much emissions/pollution, cost so much public money, etc).

The big question is why did they decide to change the plan for the hierarchy of comparators to remove those from outside the sector or industry..when they were originally going to be included? All the advice is redacted. This effectively wipes out a teachers claim, so it would be very good to know.
I've spent all morning reading these docs and its totally outrageous. There's about zero mention of the benefits of life changing pay equity settlements and how it is a GOOD THING!
Let’s call it what it is. Scrapping pay equity claims for women, then saying limiting human rights is “justified” to protect employers, isn’t neutral. It’s misogyny baked into lawmaking. #nzpol

The absolute number one thing the city council can do for public transport is bus lanes, including most crucially the Golden Mile, Harbour Quays and eastern suburbs connection. Serious candidates committed to public transport need to commit to advancing the bus priority plan with no more delays. 2/
