Learned at an early age there's people who teach & real teachers, & you do not go to war with a real teacher - Miss Rachel is obviously the latter

The women deserve their own book, but -
- Rubenhold claims no one researched the women before. Untrue. It had been happening for 40+ years & she uses that research.
- she claims most of the women weren't sex workers & this label was applied to shame - false, & she ignores evidence to the contrary

Didn't know who Hallie Rubenhold was. As soon as I saw "popular historian," I knew who she was.

A word for Mary Jane Kelly (born c.1863) murdered yesterday by Jack the Ripper, 1888.
She’s untraceable. All we know is what she told friends, and much of the following may be untrue. She claimed she was born in Limerick (county or town isn’t clear) & moved to Wales when young.

Boscov's is fascinating. A cross between JC Penney, Marshall's, and an old dry goods store. You can get name-brand stuff cheap, store brand-ish stuff very cheap, last season's Phillies merchandise, toys, etc. Family owned, great customer svc, all stores last decorated in 1992. People love them.
Take a bow, Boscov’s, for this outfit that marries rural (camoflauge) and urban (matching sweatsuit) Pennsylvania fashion.
Billing this as “Rustic Romance” is also a choice. A choice that may lead to some breakups Christmas morning.

I appreciate Professor Lobel’s expertise but you can’t tell me this isn’t Wally Shawn in the middle of a 14hr Andre Gregory improv
Folks, this morning let me introduce you to 18th-century sculptor Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, best known for his series of so-called "character heads"

All the best things I've written embarrass me & usually several people I know. When I meet actors many are like, wait, you like penguin videos? How do you like penguin videos?

If you want to know what producers do, listen to the Velvet Underground’s version of Andy’s Chest, then the one produced by Bowie & Ronson

Lynne Ramsay’s Ratcatcher, which I’ve meant to see for years & finally did. It’s not influenced by Terence Davies & Ken Loach, it uses their tools to make something new, personal, & specific - maybe the most assured & mature debut I’ve ever seen, one of the best British movies of all time
What is the best movie not from this year that you’ve seen this year? Bonus points if you say why

Visited 1yo niece. She was a bit shy but I brought her a Ben Franklin bear (yes) & that did the job. Then I read Corduroy to her, that REALLY did the job. Then I read baseball to her; she swung the bat. But - not joking - she loved this most of all. Ripped it from my jacket -

Important to remember JCO has written 35 hrs a day for 65 or so years

My theory about Joyce Carol Oates is that all her bad posts are her charging up like Godzilla's spines until she lets loose with a radioactive blast that leaves the world's richest Nazi a pile of ash

The new Temple of Mithras (returned to its original site) below Bloomberg HQ is stunning for lots of reasons - one is that before you go downstairs you're in a room full of hundreds of Roman things found in the area. Coins, tools, pipes, shoes, fragments of clothing. It's quite moving.
If you go to Colchester there are loads of houses with similar mosaics that have been excavated.

All this stuff is 10-20 ft below London. It just appears. Left is a Roman dining room floor, probably an inn, discovered in Southwark 2022; then an intact mausoleum, also at Southwark, 2023; then a Roman shop floor in St Bride's Fleet St, which appeared when the Germans blew it up.

I've never had meetings at Disney (for obvious reasons) & Paramount. Looks like that'll hold 🙄
Under new head of Paramount David Ellison, the studio has drawn up a list of actors who opposed the Gaza genocide and will not allow them to appear in its films and TV shows.
Does this sound familiar?
Also, "Ellison is reportedly aiming to take over Warner Bros. next."

Paramount Has Blacklist for Stars Deemed “Overtly Antisemitic” — World of Reel
It sure looks like the likes of Javier Bardem, Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, and Mark Ruffalo won’t be making movies for Paramount in the foreseeable future.
