He's specifically comparing *the reaction* to automation of middleware, which technically removes paid employee opportunities with a licensed service, to the reaction to AI automation.

Mat, tbf I think you've taken the "but" a little out of context there. For a start, we don't know if it's a follow on or a new sentence due to how it's quoted. Then, the "but beyond that" is talking about paid middleware that automates tasks they used to handle manually - and the reaction to it...
