One of my favorite (and longest) #OTD threads. Stephen Hawking, glowing black holes, the Simpsons, and having to sit next to one of my childhood idols and explain their work to a group of curious colleagues. 🧪 ⚛️ 🔭
Stephen Hawking was born #OTD in 1942. He developed theorems with Penrose that determine when general relativity produces singularities, established classical laws of black hole mechanics, and hypothesized that quantum effects cause black holes to radiate. 🧪 ⚛️ 🔭

I think there's no person so hated by the ambitious of this world as Bryar Kosala, since those who fight viciously to grasp the reins of power can't forgive that she could rise so high & still be nice. She likes helping & is good at running things.

In an era where support for trans rights and LGBTQ+ in general was more tepid and understated, because people were afraid to upset bigots, GDQ decided they were going to be loudly, unapologetically inclusive. The result is one of the greatest communities in video games.
The extent to which Games Done Quick has helped to steer the larger speedrunning community - one of the most hardcore video game enthusiast subcultures there is - into becoming something so welcoming, inclusive and supportive astonishes me

This set of observations is produced by my scrolling Reddit and otherwise listening to people talk about "how to write."

A) there is no requirement that any of your characters has any sort of "arc" let alone a redemption.

B) there is also no requirement that your fiction has a plot.

GOOD NEWS! Researchers have shown Alzheimer’s disease can be REVERSED- not just prevented. Using a potent neuroprotective compound called P7C3-A20, they found RESTORING balance to a central cellular energy molecule (NAD+) not only PREVENTED disease features but REVERSED them, EVEN at late stages.

So wichtig". 1/5

Interesting thread
I would like to articulate one of the BIGGEST misconceptions about cat breed genetics by talking about the NEBELUNG!

An extremely rare breed with only SIX(6) in the whole US, and no breeders, yet one that thousands of folk online are convinced they own.

Your cat is NOT any breed, and that's okay.

I’ve not talked about the LLM bubble on here yet, as mostly I discuss technical rather than economic issues, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about quite a bit. Especially while reading Carlota Perez’s Technological Revolutions and Financial Capital. Here are some thoughts.

I wrote this with so much love. Through his biography, his own words & the music of those who remember him, I invite us once again to think critically about what decolonisation means through the life of a man who lived and died for it. Long live Amílcar Cabral.

One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. This Spanish Moon Moth (Graellsia isabellae) caught in the lamplight outside a hostel where we were staying in a dark pine forest in the Catalan Pre-Pyrenees. Moons before, as a caterpillar it would have somehow found substance in miserly pine needles

Come check it out if your interested in multilingual linguistic evaluation of LLMs (there will be parse trees on the slides! There's still use for syntactic structure!)
