A 4G pitch costs nearly £100k in the UK - & I understand 'infrastructure' & costs are different everywhere. But at this scale, $1bn isn't actually a lot, though it's a great clickbait headline figure for a corrupt organisation welcoming murderous fascists to destroy the "world game".

Shame on the @theguardian.com for this totally uncritical, incurious puff piece on behalf of a former colleague that makes no effort to interrogate the people behind the imaginary, call out the AI slop, or really think beneath the surface at all.

I got some incredibly unprofessional and undeserved comments from Helena for simply asking if she could investigate both sides of this issue. 😬 and I’m not the only one…

Remember when Aaron Swartz downloaded JSTOR archives that he had full legal rights to download and the FBI hounded him literally to death for it? Anyway,
NEW: Common Crawl, the massive archiver of the web, has gotten cozy with AI companies and is providing paywalled articles for training data. They’re also lying to publishers who have asked for material to be removed. “The robots are people too,” CC’s exec director told us when we asked about this.
The Nonprofit Feeding the Entire Internet to AI Companies
Common Crawl claims to provide a public benefit, but it lies to publishers about its activities.

Every time I open an Adobe Acrobat file the screen is immediately taken up by a slowly loading AI overview I don't need and immediately close. It wastes a lot of time and energy.
This post brought to you by Chrome adding a Gemini button in the corner, then popping up an enormous "hey want to use Gemini?" chat bubble when I didn't immediately start using it, with no option to never show it again.

Mamdani has been in the White House for one day and already the right wing loons are resigning and fleeing. Imagine if he got four years.

We must only be a week or so off the annual English Christmas story. That being, the erection of the kind gift of a tree from Norway for Trafalgar Square, followed by a series of tabloid newspapers saying how sad and disappointing it is.

The only other time I’ve seen Trump genuinely beaming like that is when he shook the hand of the guy who had Jamal Khashoggi dismembered.

"that's ok, I'm a fascist"
Q: Are you affirming that you think President Trump is a fascist?

MAMDANI: I've spoken about--

TRUMP: That's okay. You can just say yes. I don't mind.

If anyone wants to commission me to write about this I have thoughts that go beyond general and easy Heatherwickitis but also speak to how architecture is designed to speak to places and people but, in this instance, really backfires.
As a football & architecture fan, this is genuinely hilarious. How does heatherwick keep grifting this grift?

I still think that Munch was trying to paint a spaniel, not a man in existential angst

It was a work by Mat Colishaw & as I expected was deliberately designed as a twisted digital hellscape, not an example of AI taking jobs. I wish people would engage brains before immediately getting angry. I was chatting to Mat recently about his digital process & this would have taken a lot of time
It’s the exclusive everyone wanted, the story that will win next year’s Pulitzer…

I can reveal London’s giant AI generated Christmas artwork, the subject of much online mockery, is being torn down - and I honestly *genuinely* think you’ll never guess why. www.londoncentric.media/p/ai-artwork...

The bizarre story of why a much-talked-about creation is being torn down. Plus: Docklands Light Railway extension, giant laser stalks the night sky, and more tales of Android phone theft rejection.

"incredibly difficult" is an understatement. It's impossible. I've made no money this year and I've written a lot.
Great that the scam artists and influencers - often both the same person - are doing fine in the end days of journalism though.

Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

I'm quite proud of this. Not because it's the best writing ever, but because it's important as a critic to be critical... At a time of press trips & pr-paid for events, it's easy to just talk about good things, ignore the bad or wax things that need to be critiqued. It's not easy to, however ...
