Cainen falls in love with Red after he saves them from a traumatic event. Then falls in love with the other love interest after they later kick out Red for… reasons. This does not end well for any of them lol.

Usually on foot or by car.

Cainen hates riding in cars due to their PTSD, so that is definitely a hindrance for them. But they live in a version of modern America, so they are heavily dependent on cars.

I’m begging novel writers to hire an artist for their covers. At least someone who can do graphic design at a minimum. I see the worst book covers on here everyday and you’re all doing such a disservice to yourself to put in the effort to write a whole book only to turn people away with a bad cover.

White text on a black background. "Yeah, that's right," he says. I can't tell at first if he's talking to me or not. "I tried to kill my own dad. You can run away screaming now or tell me I'm an ungrateful bastard who threw his life down the drain, whatever you want." I do neither of those things. I go to pat him on the back, an empty gesture of comfort because I don't know what else to say. As I do, he pulls me into a hug. "Thanks for listening to my bullshit," he says, sniffling. I almost make a joke about him getting snot on my uniform, but the comment dies in my mouth. "Anytime," I say instead. He's still hugging me. I can feel his knuckles digging into my back where his hands are still balled into angry fists. I'm waiting for the usual moment when my body starts screaming at me to run, or punch him in the face. It doesn't happen. "I mean, I can't say I fully get it, but I can't say I don't get it. Hell, I kinda wanna kill him now, too, and I haven't even met the guy." Andee chuckles through his tears. It sounds almost like he's choking. "I'll make sure to call you up the next time I'm planning patricide." "We'll put the homo in homicide." Now Andee actually laughs. He leans back, ending our slightly awkward hug session. "It's spelled with an I. Hom-i-cide, not hom-o-cide," he corrects me. I roll my eyes. "I know that. It's still based on the same root word. It's close enough. Work with me here, man. We'll commit gay murder together. It'll be great." "Sure," he says. "And then we'll run from the cops together and hide out in abandoned buildings or something. Real romantic shit." "And they'll say we were roommates." Andee laughs. "Yeah. They'll say we were roommates."

I think almost all of my characters would hide a zombie bite from each other lol. Red technically couldn’t become a zombie, because he isn’t real. Cainen would have to be the one to kill him. Andee would “take care” of himself. I don’t think either of them could kill Cainen, though.

Sounds like bullshit to me. But I'm done talking. She caught me off guard, and I can tell I've already said too much. There's pity in her eyes. She's not supposed to pity me. He did follow me around the school for a week. At least. He shrugs. "I didn't fully register the time. I just wanted to, uh, introduce myself before people started waking up. I figured the more people around, the harder it'd be to, uh, talk." "Yeah, sure. Hence why I followed you into a creepy abandoned building." "It really did sound better in my head," Red says. "I dunno what I thought was gonna happen. I'm not exactly an expert on social interaction, given that I've been invisible to everyone for the past two weeks and may or may not exist. Kinda puts a damper on one's social life." I snort despite myself.

Just..." Even in the dark, I can see him flush. "I just don't want to be alone right now," he finishes. "Not in, like, a weird way, or anything, I'm just— I'm making this worse, aren't I?" "Maybe a little." I say. I laugh a little louder than I meant to. but a quick glance at Andee's bed reveals that he is still sleeping. Typical. "I have nightmares," Red says. "No worries, man. I get it." Red sighs. "Yeah. I guess. I just... He doesn't finish the thought. "Your nightmares," I ask, already anticipating that I'll regret the answer, "Are they about... your, uh, past? Like, before you... got here, I mean." Red nods. "Yeah. I haven't exactly had a stellar childhood. Which makes it so much more fucked up that I'm... like this. Who'd purposely design someone to be this screwed up? It's like building a machine you already know isn't gonna work." I shrug. "Don't ask me, man. I just live here." He smiles slightly. I look at the clock. It's not even four yet. Red catches me looking. "Sorry, I'm not great at making conversation." I flush. "Me neither, clearly."

White text on a black background. I tune out the rest of his speech, instead taking inventory of the crowd. It's more diverse than I thought. But there's definitely a different vibe than public school. I'm not sure how to describe it. Maybe it's the seas of white shirts and navy blue bottoms, the dead silent atmosphere as if each and every one of these rookie students are already terrified of Mr. Queen and the school he commands. Maybe they're worried that if they step out of line then they'll violate their parole or something. Give it time. After the first few weeks, the whole dynamic is going to change. New students are going to settle in to their routines and their old bad habits. They just need to get a feel for their environment first. The teachers are all woven into the spaces between the tables, like poorly disguised undercover cops. Obviously, they're here to keep us in line while Mr. Queen speaks. I shudder to think about what that might mean. Are private schools allowed to use corporal punishment? I mentally remind myself to Google it later.

White text on a black background. As promised, Aunt Tracy isn't here. I blast my music as loud as I can and wander the halls like a ghost. There are no pictures of my parents. About a month after the accident (or The Accident, as I call it), she smashed every frame and threw out every picture in a depressive rage. I can't say I blame her. But sometimes I miss their faces, and I wish they were in the house watching me grow up. Although maybe it's good that they never saw the mess I've become. They can die feeling like they succeeded. That burden falls on Aunt Tracy. Not that she's at fault. I'm pretty sure my mess is my own. But she's the one left to deal with the steaming pile of fresh shit that my parents left in their wake. One last dump before they were gone forever. Thanks a lot, Mom and Dad.
