this week in "AI Skeptics Reading Group" we're reading chapter 4 (if it quacks like a doc: ai hype and social services), future former mayor Eric Adams showed up, how nice!

how candidates feel about AI in the context of social services should be a litmus test for appropriateness to serve the public
In New York City, Mayor Eric Adams (former cop and wannabe tech bro) has thrown resources at technological toys, with results ranging from laughably ineffective to dangerous. This includes a short-lived New York City Police Department robot that was meant to patrol the Times Square subway station and needed two uniformed human minders to deter would-be vandalizers. Adams and his administration released a broad-reaching “AI Action Plan” that aims to integrate AI tools into many parts of city government, the centerpiece of which was a chatbot that could answer common questions for residents of the Big Apple. Unfortunately, that chatbot isn’t able to reliably retrieve and convey accurate information; like all LLM-based chatbots, it was designed to make shit up. A 2024 investigation by The Markup, Documented, and the local New York City nonprofit The City revealed that the tool tells its users to flat-out break the law. The chatbot responded that it was perfectly okay for landlords to discriminate based on whether those potential tenants need rental assistance, such as Section 8 vouchers. It also stated confidently that employers could steal workers’ tips and could feel free to not inform workers of any significant schedule changes. These mistakes would be hilarious and absurd if they didn’t have the potential to encourage employers to commit wage theft and landlords to discriminate against poor tenants. Despite all these rampant errors, the chatbot interface has all the authority of an official New York City government page.

I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this video.

I don’t know how we’ve gotten to the point where men in full balaclavas can abduct daycare teachers while they’re watching children.

But I do know that this isn’t sustainable. Abolish ICE. There is no way to reform this.

Having a unique ORCID identifier is one way for academics to distinguish themselves from other researchers with the same name, but a far simpler solution would be for the bigger one to consume the smaller one.

Panel at #Crossref2025 wonders if metadata has an image problem. Bianca Kramer says the word metadata not used in the Barcelona Declaration. Mariángela Napoli thinks perception of metadata is something too technical. Kazuhiro Hayashi describes metadata as "the unsung hero". Time for a rebrand ;)

Most award speeches are not memorable. This one was. Actress/comedian Hannah Einbinder said, ‘Go Birds, Fuck ICE and Free Palestine’ after winning a 2025 Emmy for ‘Hacks.’ She voiced what many were thinking. We are tired of all the injustice in the world and we want change. At first listen, I thought she was a birdwatcher (Go Birds), against ICE and into global solidarity. Later, I learned it was “Go Philadelphia Eagles” which is still kind of cool to combine with what else she said. I still illustrated it from the point of view of bird watching.
