I knew the WaPo podcasts were nonsense when they told me to pick Carragher over Salah.

🤷‍♂️

“[it] will be the second time this season Liverpool's opponents should have been reduced to 10 men on a VAR review.

In August, Bournemouth's Marcos Senesi should have been sent off when handling the ball as Hugo Ekitike was about to run through on goal.”
Few VAR talking points this Monday.

Looking at:
📌 Why Diego Gomez should have been sent off v Liverpool
📌 VAR red card numbers in the Premier League
📌 Hwang red card v Arsenal?
📌 Should Brentford's penalty have been onside?

Read all about it here 👇

VAR: Why Diego Gomez should have been sent off for tackle on Florian Wirtz
Premier League VARs continue have a problem with red cards. And Diego Gomez's tackle on Florian Wirtz shows it.

Looking at the January window, Liverpool have 17 non-HG players so they cannot easily add another one. They have 7 HG players but can drop Mrozek and free up 2 spots for HG players (say, Guehi and Semenyo). I’d also bring back McConnell from Ajax (U22) and Harvey from Villa (HG) if possible. #LFC

Sports should be banned.
Packers edge Micah Parsons, believed to have suffered a torn ACL, finished his season with 12.5 sacks and a significant piece of one of the NFL’s best defenses. But his injury knocks him out for the end of the regular season and beyond.

StatsZone app has it at 71/77, still the highest volume for a Liverpool player. Have been advocating for using Curtis in the deeper left side role over Macca, with Macca moved to the 10, at least as long as Slot uses the 4D2 formation. Need Curtis and Dom to provide defensive stability wide. #LFC

Incredible that the top 6 on this list are all from the last decade. Goes to show what a successful period it has been for Liverpool under Klopp and now Slot. 2 PL titles, 2 almost PL titles, 1 CL trophy, 2 more CL finals, CWC, SC, 1 FA + 2 EFL cups. We have been blessed to support this team. #LFC

Curtis remains so underrated.
Curtis Jones is making his 200th Liverpool appearance in all competitions.

Aged 24 years and 317 days, he is the youngest midfielder to reach 200 for #LFC since Steven Gerrard in September 2003 (23y 121d).

277 - Mo Salah has 277 goal involvements for Liverpool in the Premier League (188 goals, 89 assists) - now the all-time record by a player for a single club in the competition, overtaking Wayne Rooney's 276 for Manchester United (183 goals, 93 assists). Only.

Liverpool played like a team on its fifth game in 15 days. The big difference was they scored 2 of 3 big chances and Brighton missed all 3 of their big chances. Variance worked in Liverpool’s favor for a change. Now a week to rest and recover and go again. #LFC

Not for thirty silver pieces, that is.
Arteta injury update
- Saliba "will be fit for Everton, tomorrow I don't know"
- Saliba issue came from ankle injury, "he looks better"
- Timber and Trossard "a matter of days"
- Rice "let's see how he is today"

Oh and Arteta says he wouldn't consider selling Jesus

With Cody out with an injury and Mo heading to AFCON (no matter what happens tomorrow), I agree with @distancecovered.bsky.social that we may see the diamond for a bit longer. At least until Cody and Mo are back and Liverpool maybe sign another winger in January.

Liverpool must also realize that they are more likely to finish in top 4 and win a cup (CL or FA) if Salah accepts a reduced role once he‘s back from AFCON and allows Slot to adjust the structure to get the most of his skillset. That is worth more than whatever lowball offer PIF could submit in Jan.
interesting @david-ornstein.bsky.social piece Liverpool and Salah -- clearly the club recognizes that if they announce they hate him and he sucks they'll get nothing for him, and so they're not doing the emotional thing

but still this only works if Salah wants it to www.nytimes.com/athletic/687...

another insightful thread 🧵 👇
Diamond formations oop from PL teams are rare. When they pop
up, there's usually a host of reasons that may or may not include injuries/lack of personnel/need to adapt to bad form, etc...Another reason is a response to specific opposition tactics, especially aggressive 'man marking'. 1/4 🧵⬇️

LFC have conceded 0.47 non-penalty xGA per game over the last 4 games. This probably does not feel right because of the goal off Virgil’s behind and the inane second half at Leeds, but it is an excellent defensive effort. As Andrew points out, need to find attacking balance but a solid foundation.
Rafa Benitez has a small blanket. Arne Slot has borrowed it.

Liverpool have conceded fewer chances since tightening up their right side, but have created less. Is that trade off worth it?

Guess what? Here's a look at some data #shock www.andrewbeasleyfootball.com/p/arne-slot-...

Liverpool could win their last two games and still finish ninth.

However, if they do win their last two games, their chances of finishing in top eight will be very high as it’s unlikely that every other team on 13 or 12 points will win out.
Champions League after week six.

Liverpool don't have the hardest remaining games based on league position but most teams above them have easier.
