50 years ago, GE workers organized the South.

On Nov 20, 1975, 730 workers at the GE turbine plant just outside Charleston, SC voted to join UE, forming Local 1202. But organizing in the South was not an easy task — as the UE NEWS noted, in local media, “Unions are presented in the image of Satan.”

On Nov 3, 2025, following 2 months of coordinated bargaining, members of UE Locals 228 & 728 ratified new agreements.

The contracts are the best in the history of the locals, containing no concessions & dozens of improvements to working conditions and compensation.

Robert L. Clark, who served as UE’s general secretary-treasurer from 1994 to 2001 and was generally known as “Bobby,” passed away on October 10. He was UE’s first Black national officer.

The UE officers have written a letter in @inthesetimes.com calling for an end to US military aid to Israel. In their letter, they write that it is our job to use our leverage as workers to help put an end to the injustice against Palestinians.

General President Carl Rosen is retiring after over four decades in UE. He walked his first picket line at age five, when his father joined his fellow members of UE Local 1114 in a four-month strike at Goodman Manufacturing on Chicago’s south side.

Earlier this year, Local 896-COGS became the first union to successfully negotiate a raise above Iowa’s state-mandated maximum arbitration award with the Board of Regents, which governs the Iowa’s higher education system.

Members of UE Local 255 have never paid anything towards their insurance premiums. However, a 26% increase in the cost of their health care plan & the limited number of insurance providers in VT put them in a difficult position during their most recent negotiations.
