More than anything else, this is what led some Senate Democrats to cut a deal: Trump’s willingness to hurt people exceeds their willingness to see people get hurt. I want to give them their due on this: They are hearing from their constituents and seeing the mounting problems, and they are trying to do what they see as the responsible, moral thing. They do not believe that holding out will lead to Trump restoring the subsidies. They fear that their Republican colleagues would, under mounting pressure, do as Trump had demanded and abolish the filibuster. (Whether that would be a good or a bad thing is a subject for another column.) This, in the end, is the calculation the defecting Senate Democrats are making: They don’t think a longer shutdown will cause Trump to cave. They just think it will cause more damage. If I were in the Senate, I wouldn’t vote for this compromise. Shutdowns are an opportunity to make an argument, and the country was just starting to pay attention. If Trump wanted to cancel flights over Thanksgiving rather than keep health care costs down, I don’t see why Democrats should save him from making his priorities so exquisitely clear. And I worry that Democrats have just taught Trump that they will fold under pressure. That’s the kind of lesson he remembers.

District Judge Sara Ellis' injunction order limits how and when feds can use gas in the Chicago area.

It restricts the use of gas in "residential or commercial areas" that could risk injury to a plaintiff class member "who is not causing an immediate threat of physical harm to another person"

Having held a hearing on November 5 and 6, 2025, the Court finds that Plaintiffs have met their burden to support the issuance of a Preliminary Injunction. The Court orally issued its ruling, containing findings of facts, conclusions of law, and stated reasons why the Court issued the injunction pursuant to Federal Rules of Civil Procedure 52(a)(2) and 65(d), on November 6, 2025, and indicated that a written opinion will follow further explaining the Court’s ruling and providing supporting evidentiary and case citations within 14 days of the issuance of this Order. Accordingly, the Court grants the motion and orders as follows: 1. If anyone else wants to try it: one russet potato shredded, wring out the liquid in the potato with a towel, little salt and pepper and two generous pinches instant mash potatoes or flour, oil the iron spread some of the potato mix, thin but overlapping, cook til browned 5 -10 min based on thinness

This imagined defense by Cheney ("What I Got Right About the Iraq War") from The Onion in 2023 ought to run as a sidebar to every obit that's published this week: is.gd/mzdB9j
It's easy for armchair critics to condemn the Iraq War. But you have to remember what things were like back in 2003. People actually trusted the government and had faith in the idea of America, Trust and faith aren't very sturdy things to build a perpetual war machine on, and they don’t make alot of money, either. The Iraq War eroded faith in the government and drove more Americans into suspicion and hatred, just as we hoped it would. Combine that with rising inequality and the American cult of the individual, and you have a perfect recipe for ensuring that most Americans are too disillusioned to mount collective resistance to any governmental transgressions. That's what I always hoped the Iraq War might accomplish, and man, it fels good to be right.
