Alaskan, biologist, quantitative ecologist, moose enthusiast, and mid birder. Team mesocarnivore. Tiny-Bitey.

I like flying things, from birds to UAS to GA aircraft. Sometimes I get to do a little.

All views expressed here are my own, and probably wrong.
I accidentally watched my first #PWHL game tonight and I'm instantly hooked. I need more pro women's hockey straight into my veins. In comparison the #Kraken Islanders game was kinda boring.

Time to bury it in a blue tarp like its founder. I'm surprised they even had 19k left.
Leaders of Alaska’s third-largest political party voted to dissolve it last month, raising questions about how the state Division of Elections would handle the registration of its more than 19,000 members.

The Alaskan Independence Party “has for some time been legally alive yet spiritually dead,” its leaders said.

I would really caution anyone against implying that paywalling this feature is a legitimate response to public outcry. The paywall is an endorsement, not a restriction. Musk is saying "this thing you're all talking about is valuable. Pay me for it." The actual material effect is just monetization.

I'm going through the NSF "Research Security" training and the accessibility features are a mess. The captions have so many typos and missing captions. I'd think the NSF of all agencies would do better. :/

ChatBots aren't people, they're word calculators, and I find it wild the press is treating them like they have personal agency. xAI is liable when their tool cranks out CP, not the "person" of Grock.
New AIWeirdness post: ChatGPT will apologize for anything, including stuff that didn't happen. It's not reflecting on stuff it did wrong, it's improv.

Then look at the surface of Mars.

Then look up to the top right.

Spot Mars' moon Phobos high in the sky.

Then notice the bright spot beside Phobos.

That's Earth.

I feel the valley can still complain about the endless windstorms. There's so much wind damage around me.
Fairbanks: day after day after day in the -40Fs
Juneau: nearly 4 feet of new snow
Anchorage: NO COMPLAINTS ALLOWED

What is it with the month of November and earthquakes?

House checked out, it got through the 6.0 scott free. My dog is too seasoned an Alaskan to make a fuss I guess, because he didn't really react.

It's crazy to remember how much commercial whaling was a huge thing. Global mammal biomass is likely down, and so much of the decline was commercial whaling.

New World!

~50% of global auto sales will be EV by 2030

~52% of global electricity will be renewables (43%) & nuclear (9%)

Petrostate politicos freakout, as Age of Fossil Fuels is ending.

But not fast enough to prevent major temperature rise & growing climate risks. #energysky

1/2 A reminder, Alaskan opinions about the PFD used to be a lot more complicated before it became entrenched tradition. In February 1983, only 29% of polled Anchorage residents thought the PFD should continue. And that's after the first PFD payout in 1982. #alaskahistory #alaska

I'm not saddened, but I'm sure as hell not celebrating. First those Democrat lawmakers in Minnesota, now Charlie Kirk. It's a sign that the destabilization of the US is accelerating, and I don't think anyone's prepared to deal with the consequences.

I found out that whales can't focus their eyes out of the water, which means the time a feeding whale made eye contact with me kayaking like 10 feet away it couldn't see me. Science ruined my favourite memory.

Damn you science!

(okay, it's kinda cool that whales had to re-evolve water-vision)
