The highest calling of journalism isn’t to tell two sides of a story.

The highest calling of journalism is to tell the truth.

And acting like a stenographer is a betrayal of your audience.
Unfortunately, in US journalism it is considered neutral to spread a lie, but it is considered "biased" to call out a lie. So, there is a structural asymmetry that rewards colorful lies with virality.

Thank you, kind @amtrak.com conductor, for reminding folks we're on the Quiet Car! I wonder if there's a Quiet Car pin. If not, I'm going to make one. I love the Quiet Car.

New tiny project: mini plant press out of samples from Ocooch Hardwoods (white oak and ash) and parts of an old backpack. I love small things.

Maybe soon we'll be able to figure out what DC's favorite Super Mario character is (as determined by Google search).

Mmmmm low Republican morale
PUNCHBOWL: “.. GOP members messaged us over the weekend saying that they, too, are considering retiring in the middle of the term. Here’s one particularly exercised senior House Republican:

I once knew a Federal bank examiner, and one time someone asked him why we had to KEEP inspecting banks over and over. He basically said every new batch of business school grads invents bank fraud from first principles.
AirBnB CEO calling it “vibe revenue” just 👨‍🍳 😘

The underlying cause of every bubble - debt masquerading as financial innovation - depends on not just short financial memory & speculative neophytism, but reinventing jargon of finance, like how each generation of kids has new ways to say same things.

Not xkcd's banger cover "Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles... Leave flakes on my mittens? Hey... These are stone with a copper veneer. I've been bamboozled by Ea-Nāṣir!" in my head again

I'm fortunate to be on Medicaid for now. The bronze plan I would have chosen after I was laid off earlier this year (and I'm still unemployed!) was $150 with subsidies. Next year and without subsidies, it'll be $550.
KEEP SHARING YOUR STORIES about increased ACA premiums due to the disappearance of subsidies. The stories clearly are having an impact, they help people feel less helpless, and they create solidarity that leads to action.

Mine went from $395→ $821. What happened for you?

The mayor loves the [version of] the city [that best serves her and her donors] and she has made decisions she thinks are in the best interest [of her monetary comfort post-mayorship]

Politics is so interesting
"I think the mayor loves the city and she has made decisions she thinks are in the best interest," said McDuffie. "Our immigrant population is core to our city, core to our economy. Do we have to communicate [with ICE]? Yes. Do we have to cooperate? I don't think so."

IT'S '6-7', COOPER. A GENERATION ALPHA TREND. WHAT THEY CALL A 'MAY-MAY'. IT'S AN ORPHANED SIGNIFIER, NO SIGNS ATTACHED. ONE COULD CALL IT DADAIST, BUT SOMME SAY IT'S TOO STUPID TO BE DADA. IT'S ANTI-MEANING, ANTI-HUMOUR, BUT DAMN IF THOSE KIDS DON'T FIND IT A CRACK-UP.

I'm excited about the possibility that more people will be able to access affordable public transit, food, and housing. We all do better when everyone's basics are taken care of. I hope at some point, everyone can understand that as a victory.

Every time one of these mass murderers dies without having faced any consequence for the massacres they ordered, the lives they destroyed, the societies they razed to the ground… I realize how far we are from a world with justice. Rest in hell Dick Cheney. Your legacy is death.
