I admit, I never did read the Oz books, but I'm not sure I missed much.

It's not just only reading the *same* books, either, because I remember my dad regularly watching Star Trek with me. It...didn't help. He just watched it for the fights, I think. He definitely didn't absorb any of the actual ideas from it.

I admittedly read it...early in my reading adult things career, but I hated it. It started out great, got...really fucking weird, and then the end was...honestly awful. Great idea, poor follow-through. And now I can't watch the musical without remembering the weird shit in the book.
