Investing in ear protection is one of the smartest things I've ever done. If I'm worried a movie might be too loud, I just use them. I've got a very tiny bit of tinnitus that gets stronger when I'm stressed, but I only hear it in silence, I want to make sure I don't make it worse.

“That was one of first ingredients of the concept. I really wanted to see women act stupid,” Kang says, adding that she’d faced pushback when attempting to create comedic women on a past project. “I have an experience of working on a different movie where we had one [female] character among five or six main characters, and she was also a twin,” Kang says. “She was played by a phenomenally talented, funny comedian. We were watching all these screenings, and we were like, ‘Why isn’t she funny? We need to have her pop.’ I was like, ‘Well, her brother is the funniest one. Why don’t we just swap it and make her the funniest thing?’ And it was just silence in the room. There was this fear of portraying female characters in a fun light, or making them the funniest one in the room, or making them look ugly and unattractive.”

Gotham City was usually full of noise, but that night it was silent and still. Though no wind blew, it was cold as the dark knight walked that familiar street. A part of him, a very small one, hoped some emergency would pull him away from this, but it seemed like fate that it was the one night where the city did not need Batman. The one person who was needed, though, was afraid to show his face. Eventually, heavy steps and the drag of his cape were Bruce Wayne’s sole companions as he went to that familiar place. So many decades ago he had been there, so eager and full of excitement, hearing his parents laugh for the last time after a show. Even if his armor kept others from hearing him, his own heavy heartbeat rang in his ears, up until the dim buzzing of the street light above met him, flickering occasionally until he stepped into the spotlight and looked down at the pavement. For awhile, he stared. The words had not yet been formed from the maelstrom of feelings inside. The storm that had raged longer than he could remember, that even now had only become a downpour that left him tired and weak. A single sigh escaped him as he knelt down. The tapestry of wounds and scars that was his body spoke of pain he long learned to ignore when needed, drowned out by one he could not. Kneeling, he let himself breathe a moment. Grounding himself. There was a small urge to analyze the scene, though he pushed it down. He knew very well what had happened and who had done it and trying to be a detective rather than grieve was him trying to avoid the moment still. Although he had to force himself, he kept from searching from clues and instead let the feelings parse themselves, until he was ready to speak. “It’s been awhile since I’ve been here. Too long.” Bruce gave himself a moment. Even if their bodies were back at the mansion, he sometimes felt their spirits were here in this place, where he had been reborn, and his ego had been forged into something new. “Father, I want you t…
