i second this! i usually go by the advice ‘treat your reader as though they’re at least as intelligent as you are’ & i also treat them as though they’re going to read properly. if people don’t then i’m afraid it’s not my problem, and i’m definitely not going to start writing for machines 😤
I've said in the past that I don't write for skimmers. If you skip past something and get confused, well Mr. Policeman, I gave you all the words.

So I'm certainly not going to write for scrapers and summarizers either 🤷‍♀️
Saw a post today that advised writers to stop writing as if a human will read it and start writing for an LLM that will be summarising.

As someone who really enjoyed trying to develop a peculiar but readable authorial voice, I find this incredibly depressing.

thing i really dislike: when the vertigo is so persistent irl that you dream of having vertigo while asleep

this time i was clinging on just inside the open door of a speeding bus while everything span, trying to tell the driver he needed to let me in or i was going to fall 🙃

hard agree - i’m also beginning to feel increasingly that we’re reaching an uncanny valley moment of many people having the same face, and quite frankly it’s freaking me out
This absolute obsession with Dorian Greying your face is so depressing to me, generations of women passing up the opportunity to pass into their powerful crone years

Would you mind if I gave my zines a little push again? Hopefully the first batch(es) have reached owners now. Maybe a good Christmas gift for someone who likes photography 👀.

Here are four pics of the same house taken over several years. #Zine #Photography

so many people don’t realise that as well as being queen of horror shirley jackson was actually an incredibly funny writer, and dropping the bloviating or the surreally-pompous into a tense scene was one of her regular sly techniques! i love her so much
another funny bit from Hill House

"No fancy sauces for *me*," Arthur said firmly. "Tell my fellows it's the mark of a cad.... Fancy sauces, women waiting on you. *My* fellows wait on themsleves. Mark of a man."

heard J upstairs on the phone say ‘you aren’t near a defibrillator are you?’ & i thought ‘oh god one of his elderly parents has collapsed’ & started mentally prepping how we’d help- until a moment later he said ‘i’m out of gear’ & i realised he’s playing a videogame with his friends 😤

this is why it’s so difficult to satirise the current tech world, because they keep consistently proving they’ve never understood a book anyway

at what point do i tell everyone who’s obsessed with GDT’s frankenstein that my literary horror dystopia was described as ‘Frankenstinian’ in the Bookseller and features a man/monster doing a Silence of the Lambs-esque moral reckoning with the scientist protagonist, because-
loving this little bit of spooky season promo from my excellent publisher @angryrobotbooks.bsky.social!
