Putting aside arguments around this capitulation about strategy vs. people suffering vs. effective protest vs. shooting ourselves in the foot etc. etc. etc., increasingly my big problem with Democratic leadership is that they leave me grasping for what, exactly, the party stands for.

American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

GOP politicians run only towards their most right-wing base, while Democratic politicians are constantly running *away* from their base, then getting pissed when the base doesn’t turn out.

There’s some sort of law of conservation of defeat that says the Democrats must respond to extraordinary electoral shellacking of Republicans by giving the GOP another unearned win.

Of the ten we started with this morning, only two remain. The bookend lyrics of #1 and #10 are also, coincidentally, the most political songs on the list.
Answers are up for Halloween’s Friday 10. Three participants guessed only five! Either it actually was a harder set than usual or people were already in sugar comas.

I don't think Republican Senators would have given up the filibuster *before* Tuesday, so I don't think they're holding on to it now *because* of Tuesday.
Nevertheless, Trump constantly demanding they get rid of the filibuster and being ignored makes him look weak at the perfect time.

I think a lot about the story Carl Reiner told: he’d have been a sewing machine repairman if not for a free WPA drama class. That led to other theater work, to Sid Caesar, to Mel Brooks, and all the rest. All because of one free class paid for by a government that felt the arts were worth teaching.

So Trump is going to go with "you have to show ID to buy food" huh? I mean, plenty of people are already irritated they have to show ID to buy working decongestants.
Trump: "It's time for Republicans to do what they have to do and that's terminate the filibuster ... we should start tonight with 'the country's open, congratulations,' then we should pass voted ID, we should pass no mail in voting ... you go to a grocery store, you have to give ID."

Earle-Sears ran a vile, confrontational, and deeply anti-trans campaign that saturated the media here in Virginia. Every time I heard one I was reminded how much hatred the other side has for my friends and the children of my friends.
