One of the things living on a college campus has done is make me an ardent supporter of mechanized sidewalk snow removal. Its efficacy is basically unmatched, especially in icy conditions like what’s seen now, and on DC’s uneven sidewalks which catch the shovel unexpectedly.
I've seen plenty of complaints about impassable roads, delayed buses, and iced-over sidewalks. But that gets to a bigger issue: most sidewalks aren't the city's responsibility, but rather homeowners or businesses. And given the cold, we may not see a thaw until next week.

A typical scene at Rutgers. This is approx. 1/4th of the crowd trying to board this bus that’s supposed to run every 5 minutes. There were 20-30 people behind me who couldn’t get on.

A Budd car with a clerestory! It’s amazing how much it actually looks like that, and serves pretty much the same function.
Courtesy of Raymond DeNicolo - apparently exactly one (1) "Almond Joy" (Budd M3) MFL car was retrofitted with air conditioning in the 90s! Facebook comments are divided as to whether it ever saw any revenue use, but if it did, it can't have been very much!

Demand-based fares actually help people who are inflexible by rewarding flexibility. If a rail service has a fixed capacity, encouraging those who can travel at less busy times to do so prevents people who can’t finding themselves unable to travel at all.
I mean on the corridor right now dynamic pricing works as much as a demand management and seat allocation method as anything else.

My YouTube channel is called Technology Connections because my brain needs to know how things work so I can make connections between different concepts.

I honestly don't think it's the news sources I follow that matter, it's just being inquisitive and piecing puzzles together.

The geometry and techniques used in this build are incredibly impressive. I’d love to know how the doors and roof were built.

East Broad Top 16, recreated as a somewhat 1:48 scale Lego model.

Made to run on 3 stud gauge Lego track, like its real life counterpart. Engine & Tender come out to 1,440 pieces and I’m using one Power functions L motor for power.

Really, really happy with the turnout.

Fun fact I discovered. The first Harris car sets were built in England by the Gloucester Car company, using the same car body as the Toronto Subway’s G series subway trains used on Canada’s first subway in a solid red colour scheme. @longbranchmike.bsky.social
