A quick update on The Poetry Thing:

Our first small trial taught us some important things about the mechanics.

Rather than force it, we’re taking a step back to build this properly.

We’ll be back soon with something stronger. In the meantime, I’ll be reading!

when B-roads leave small towns I follow with anticipation as they shake off doors and chimneys, double yellow lines, and plunge into a greener possibility of hedgerows, meadows, valleys, woods, swap pigeons for red kites and kestrels, cats for fallow deer and foxes, and pedestrians for walkers. what villages and hamlets lie down there? what isolated farms and run-down saddleries? the B-road tugs me from mundanity to something magical — from fact to hope. the off-side wheels an inch away from where cow parsley hides the drop – vertiginous – down to the Glyme, and through the open on-side windows we could pick the delicately arching bluebells (though of course we…

Failing and Flying Jack Gilbert, 1925-2012 Everyone forgets that Icarus also flew. It's the same when love comes to an end, or the marriage fails and people say they knew it was a mistake, that everybody said it would never work. That she was old enough to know better. But anything worth doing is worth doing badly. Like being there by that summer ocean on the other side of the island while love was fading out of her, the stars burning so extravagantly those nights that anyone could tell you they would never last. Every morning she was asleep in my bed like a visitation, the gentleness in her like antelope standing in the dawn mist. Each afternoon I watched her coming back through the hot stony field after swimming, the sea light behind her and the huge sky on the other side of that. Listened to her while we ate lunch. How can they say the marriage failed? Like the people who came back from Provence (when it was Provence) and said it was pretty but the food was greasy. I believe Icarus was not failing as he fell, but just coming to the end of his triumph.

The Pine Dresser Dismantling the pine dresser (put up in ’74), I am stuck on a last warped hinge. A lone bolt writhes like a maggot, burrowing deep, holding onto the shelving for never used plates, when my father’s cusses return again. Back then, a brace of strangers delivered the jaundiced wood in two parts: the younger leading but unspeaking, the other cigarette bobbing, brusquely bossing, and me being ushered away while my father strained and swore, breaking the likely same askew fastening. So now I connect once more, my struggle to reverse, to undo. Each laboured half-turn back, along the gnaw of a crooked path, refinds the thread of an afternoon’s strain, preserved so unexpectedly, in the unforgiving amber grain.
