This is your city on driverless cars.

A blackout in San Francisco yesterday cut power to traffic lights. Drivers coped; Waymos just stopped moving, often in intersections, stranding passengers and compounding gridlock.

Worked hard to get this into Guardian Oz & big props to @fiercemum.bsky.social for setting it up & Melissa Davey for publishing it. She will doubtless get loads of hassle from transphobes for it, but it needs to be out there.

The idea of “imported” violence against women and girls is a deeply comforting fiction - one that allows people to avoid looking at where it actually happens: within our homes and behind closed doors.
The Violence Isn’t Imported. It’s Domestic.
Kemi Badenoch’s attempt to blame violence against women on migrants doesn’t just collapse under scrutiny - it actively distracts us from where the harm really happens, and who is actually responsible.

Interesting La Vuelta route for 2026. Starting in Monaco. Finishing in Granada. And luckily for me, stage 12 passes 10 mins from my parents house. And stage 13, finishes in the town, Loja, they lived near for 15 years. So Spain in September is calling 😊

This is my cyclical reminder that there's really only one consistently reliable source of info in the public record that isn't owned by right wing billionaires, who really want to put an end to it.

An article in the Financial Times argued that Britain should “fall in love with cars again” and invest in more motorways.

Here’s why the economic argument is flawed and why we should not.

Your pilot today, aboard this AA154 flight to Washington, is inexperienced and unqualified. We wish you a safe journey. It’ll be fine. It’s probably a good thing.
A level of discussion only previously seen or heard when a Talksport phone-in host "just puts it out there" on a night when the number of callers is extremely low.

If you design a multi-modal city that makes walking, biking & public transit attractive options, it works better for everyone, including drivers.

INCLUDING DRIVERS.

Note to self: check sealant is good before winter. Don’t leave it until a wet and miserable ride and a puncture reveals said sealant is dry as a bone and won’t seal. And the valve lock nut won’t undo. So can’t remove valve and fit a tube. (Luckily, Sister only a 15min push away, with pliers!)
