Know what the difference is between a Holmes pastiche and a Holmes fanfic? One is traditionally published. That's it. They are *both* fanfic. When you take someone else's characters and write stories about them, it's fanfic. BBC Sherlock, Elementary, Watson, even House - all fanfic.
I saw some guy say “STOP CALLING WICKED ‘FANFIC’ IT’S ~~~LITERARY REVISIONISM~~~” which sure is a weird way to say fanfic
