Day 18 - Out of This World
Sea of Tranquility Apollo Lunar Landings

Technically, there is just the one Apollo mission in the Mare Tranquilitus, but the others are in the extent. Fun fact: I grew up in the Rocket City, and I was born on the anniversary of a lunar landing.

The abbreviations “i.e.” and “e.g.” are clearly not the same, so why are they always getting mixed up? And which one can be used with “etc.”? Refresh your knowledge of three common Latin abbreviations, this week at CMOS Shop Talk.
I.e., E.g., Etc.
Latin may be a dead language, but many of its words and phrases flourish in today’s English. The most common Latin borrowing might be an abbreviation: the all-purpose etc., short for et cetera, “and o...

#30DayMapChallenge - Day 19 - Projections

Seeing how Alaska gets squished, pulled, and distorted to fit in these different coordinate systems. Definitely explains how I got much of the way through grade school before realizing the sheer size of Alaska.

Day 15 #30DayMapChallenge - Incidents attended by Fire and Rescue Services

Using data from MHCLG and shapefiles from the ONS, the number of incidents attended to by each fire & rescue service in England for FY 2025/26. Unsurprisingly, the big city areas have the most incidents.

I noticed yesterday OpenStreetMap now shows the site where the new Birmingham City stadium will be. Plans get released this week so curious to see how accurate the footprint actually is.

Day 13 #30DayMapChallenge - How far can you walk from Birmingham City's stadium?

The Blues had to feature (as always!) and this time it's to answer the question how far can you walk in 10 mins. I may update this in the future to show all pubs within a reasonable walking distance!

Day 12 #30DayMapChallenge - Map from 2125 (almost...2100)

Used {tmap} to plot changes to sea level projections from 2010 to 2100. I used the animate function over faceted maps to create the gif. Not sure its suited to this dataset but I can see its usefulness for other stuff.

#30DayMapChallenge - Day 15 - Fire

I almost made a map with a more serious tone, but then I came to my senses. Here is another Taco Bell map. Vermont only has 5 locations (same as Taylor, Michigan actually) and if I squint really hard, Vermont is sort of shaped like a torn Fire sauce packet.

For the fans sake, I hope the remaining dates on the tour go better than yesterday.
