One of the things about people showing up to protest for the first time, that many, many armchair theorists don't grasp, is the effect of seeing what happens with your own eyes, then seeing how media covers it, and what is said ABOUT YOU by media and political personalities/office holders.

I sincerely will never forget the first time I saw “clash between police and protesters,” after watching law abiding people, who’d followed every direction given, attacked with tear gas and violence. Then watched fry cooks and student teachers called “paid agitators.”

i can't speak for all sects and denominations, but there's many reasons that the idea of being "saved" before the Rapture™ comes (and all the nonbelievers are punished) holds more weight among the Evangelical Right in the US than doing good works and loving your neighbor.
christianity treating life & reality like a pit stop before eternal salvation is why shit is bad btw. these ghouls literally cannot value life on the planet. it is antithetical to the concept of heaven and hell. they really think something "better" awaits them and they have no duty to life on earth

This is the dynamic across most of America: Liberal cities generate revenue, which state governments then transfer to benefit conservative rural areas, whose residents despite city-dwellers and consistently vote to harm them. But politicians endlessly pander to rural voters and demonize cities.
Another critical piece of missing context in this story: tax dollars flow from the MSP metro to rural Minnesota. People in the city subsidize the lifestyles of people living in the country minnesotareformer.com/2023/12/04/t...

america existed relatively functionally with extremely minimal immigration enforcement until way longer than most people assume. the first serious efforts to bar people from entry were explicitly born out of racist paranoia towards a wave of chinese economic arrivants

listen, Mr. Too Damn Bluesky. being a lawyer i know your job is bounded by the possibilities offered by the law as written. venturing into its spirit is rare and dangerous in your profession. but in this case it is the spirit as well as the letter that is broken.
Very few people who say “abolish ICE” mean “abandon all immigration enforcement.” Rather, they mean “the structure of immigration enforcement is irretrievably broken and needs to be reorganized, just like we did 23 years ago when we created ICE.” /1
