Such a good essay! Emily St. James nails why there is so much about modern criticism that I find negative and off-putting. I wish critics would talk more about why they love a movie (or even just found it interesting) and less about dissecting the parts they don’t like. Find reasons to celebrate.
The paragraph about TV Tropes is spot on. I can't bear that approach to criticism where the main aim seems to be asserting superiority to the work. People who'll identify an influence and be like "Ah, rumbled!" episodes.ghost.io/art-criticis...

@emilyrcwilson.bsky.social I just wanted to say thank you for this new translation of the Iliad — I’m reading it aloud to my partner as a bedtime story (half a “book” most nights), and it’s the first time I’ve ever read the story myself. We’re nearly halfway through, and very much enjoying it.
