An easy way to explain luddites:
Textile manufacturers brought in machines that could do in an hour what would have taken 12 hours by hand.
And then, tried to keep paying the now 12x more productive workers the same wages as before.

The importance of being a playwright / writer is not always, in fact maybe never, truly known. We toss our words into the vast ocean of humanity with hope and trust they find port. And whether we know it or not, it’s vital we continue the work.
I hope someone draws this wonderful story about Tom Stoppard's Arcadia and the power of the arts to help us see things differently, to the attention of our Education Secretary. Do read it, it will lift your spirits.
