Mercedes Lackey's "The Black Gryphon." Spectacular bit of fiction, the character of Amberdrake remains inspiring to this day.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

Say it with me: we would not be seeing this authoritarian censorship takeover in the United States, had both parties, the media and elite institutions not already greased the path with the muzzling of speech on Palestine.

I am so freaking excited for Knights of Guinevere.

I will remind folks those images of Nazi book burnings aren't burning just any books. They're burning the library of Magnus Hirschfeld; a gay, Jewish doctor who created an institute dedicated to LGBTQ sex education and healthcare. And a man who pioneered gender affirming care surgeries.

I think that something a lot of Centrist Dem candidates and lawmakers don't get is that their constituents understand the message when they announce who their acceptable losses are.

That message being that they are willing to discard those they are supposed to serve if they think it will buy power.

In the era of "take our wins where we can get them"

The NYC Mayoral Primary is one hell of a win.

the hong kong protestors used the phrase "do not split" to mean that the radical protest and peaceful protest arms of the movement should refuse to criticize each other.
June 8, 2025 at 7:30 PM
Reminder:

You do not recognize any protesters in any photos.

You do not know them.

You cannot offer identifying information.

You will not talk about anything that could identify any protester in a photo on social media.

You will not meme photos.

Protesters who are identified turn up dead.

Infighting is a function of fascism. The scramble for personal power and recognition is by design so that none challenge the Party, only each other.

The question was never whether or not it would come to blows, only what will be left to salvage of our social services in the wake of it.
The craziest thing about this fight between Trump and Elon Musk is that Republicans are trying to take away health care from 16 million people to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.

These days, I find myself thinking a lot about the saying "Truth is stranger than Fiction."

Like Nietzsche's "God is dead," (Oh fuck what am I doing I just referenced Nietzsche on the internet) I've seen a lot of works in my years mocking the statement by taking it in the most literal terms.

Hey, Senate, apropos to nothing, I recently sat down and read Maus for the first time.

One of the things that stuck with me was that collaborators frequently showed up dead, killed by the Nazis when they decided they were no longer useful.

So, how's that resistance going?

If (and I do think we all know why I say if) there is enough government left to salvage on the other side of all of this, one of the things that needs to be done is for there to be a sweeping reform eliminating all laws that allow for the elimination of due process. Yes, under any circumstances.
