one thing that is difficult to talk about regarding the "New Deal Coalition" is the extent to which it was possible only due to a deeply corrupt, semi-democratic political system that was rapidly discredited in the post-War era and reformed out of existence by a public that viewed it as untenable
In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

Despite electoral wins in 2025, “to have any hope of fixing the root problems that plague our democracy and our economy, Democrats need a majority that lasts, like the New Deal coalition,” the veteran Democratic strategist David Plouffe writes.
Opinion | Democrats Will Lose in 2028 Unless They Change Course Now
Despite the successes of 2025, the party still needs a radical shake up.

on one hand we have the unfathomable logistical, operational and political task of canceling american elections, on the other hand we have the ravings of a demented old man who can't even pacify a mid-sized midwestern city. and i'm the silly one? i'm the irrational one?

The current politics in the United States can best be understood as a basic distinction between people who have sincere ethical and moral beliefs about the dignity of others—and are willing to act on that—and those who see the State as a tool to enact pain on enemies.

You're otherwise just LARPing.

The distinction between identifying as liberal, leftist, or anti-MAGA conservative functionally means literally nothing.

It has basically no bearing on someone's commitment to sets of ethical values and their willingness to act on them as it relates to the current domestic situation of America.

On my way to the Supreme Court where I'll be proud to support 15-year-old Becky Pepper-Jackson, West Virginia's only transgender athlete, as she opposes the state's effort to ban her from playing as herself.

Win or lose, Becky and her family are heroes for standing up for what's right

For my entire 15 years in NYC, this ****ing ramp has been my go-to example of how stupid the bike "infrastructure" that has actually been built in the city is. And @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social just went out and fixed it on day 6.

I feel so represented I could cry.
Zohran just went out and fixed the Williamsburg Bridge bike entrance. Just did it. No faffing, no nonsense. Bam. Fixed.

a response to the jeffersonian ideal of education promoting virtue that still haunts me is that there were men who recited goethe in the morning, quoted hegel in the afternoon, and played mozart in the evening with still enough time to run a death camp
But I don't think it makes you a *morally* better person. It might be one of the ways your morality is shaped or the language you use to express it, but it's a vessel, not the substance. We do not, after all, think of professors of English Literature as an unusually virtuous bunch.

"Get the principals on camera" is such a telling phrase here, because it tells us that for Weiss there's no world in which the victims of these horrific actions can actually be seen as the subjects of the story: They're background noise, and the people who matter are the ones sending them.
Weiss concluded: “We need to be able to make every effort to get the principals on the record and on camera. To me, our viewers come first, not a listing schedule or anything else. And that is my North Star, and I hope it's the North Star of every person in this newsroom.”

Such a treat to speak with @volts.wtf about social identity and the epistemic crisis.

David is really sharp and does a fantastic interview - no small feat to make a plodding academic sound like a lively conversationalist!

Highly recommend the podcast to anyone (like me) who didn't know it before.
Today on Volts: I've got a nerdy one for you! I talk with political scientist @samuel-bagg.bsky.social about the epistemic crisis & its roots in social identity. He explains why factchecking & media literacy classes will never solve misinformation -- why something deeper & stronger is required.
The cure for misinformation is not more information or smarter news consumers
Political scientist Samuel Bagg explains why social identity is at the root of the misinformation crisis -- which calls for something deeper than factchecking.
