The book club scam has taken an exciting new leap forward. I got one today from a "curated literary platform and newsletter" that, unusually, offered a link to its website. I'm in edits, so obviously I took the opportunity to procrastinate. /1

The other thing is that if you’re using a dozen pen names, you aren’t expecting people to read one of your books and WANT to read the next one. You’re gambling on them taking a chance on a new author, over and over. Romance readers read a LOT, but they’re not stupid.
This article is incredible. It says everything us actual authors have been saying for years, but with a smile on its face.

“If you hide that there’s A.I., it sells just fine,” she said.

Uh huh? Tell me more. Like how you published 19 novels to sell 20,000 copies. An average of 1000 copies a title.
“If I can generate a book in a day, and you need six months to write a book, who’s going to win the race?” God this is bleak

there's so much disrespect of romance writers and romance readers baked into the idea that AI-driven production of novels is 'better'. as if writing romance isn't skillful, hard and joyous work. as if romance readers aren't discerning, loyal and savvy.

Good morning to everyone who writes their own goddamn romance novels, using their messy human brain, because that’s where the good shit comes in and we all know it

The article uses a pseudonym for this woman because she is worried that if people know her real name, her production of AI slop will damage her publishing and coaching business.

Someone who churns out hundreds of AI "books" and makes money tricking people into buying them thinking they're getting a novel isn't a writer. They're a scammer.

They're no more an author than a snake oil salesman is a doctor. It's just fundamentally a different thing.

just to be clear, this also means that huge numbers of romance titles are now functionally out of print. and sure, romance has always been an ephemeral genre, but this decimates the genre in a very real way.

Hi there!
I'm Sol, a Spanish translator, proofreader, beta-reader and unpublished writer.
I'm working on 10 WIPs at the moment and I'd love to self-publish something one day.
It's gonna take a while because I have anxiety and burnout, but I'm getting there little by little
