NEW: ICE has torn up its $180M cap on a proposed immigrant-tracking program and is now guaranteeing private surveillance firms at least $7.5M each, with potential payouts reaching $281M per vendor. The change signals a shift from “pilot” to full-scale outsourcing of street-level investigative work.

This is me after being pepper sprayed by SPPD. The crowd was noisy but completely nonviolent. There was a lot of anger but no violence from the crowd- SPPD escalated.

As far as i can tell, people are recording/yelling while wearing their pajamas and sandals, and the feds respond by pointing their weapons at the crowd and then gassing a residential block.

I don't know what organizing around this *should* look like in Saint Paul however we've seen across the river that making the most visible efforts (especially on social media) attempts at shaming the mayor into action will only work if the person in office already feels a sense of shame & obligation

I don't know how Mayor-elect Her plans to navigate this starting in just over a month, but I hope her team is ready cuz it's gonna get rough fast, and a significant chunk of Her's voters put their mark next to her name believing that she's at least as progressive as Carter.

It's certainly worth finding out why SPPD worked with ICE today compared to just the most recent example, but regardless of explanation the toothpaste is out & I think the average Saint Paul opinion is gonna shift fast.

Whatever one thought of it in the moment it's clear that a wide swath of Saint Paul residents have given SPPD a lot of good faith assumptions during an era when policing is under greater scrutiny. And I think today is gonna mark a major shift in that sentiment for a significant chunk of citizens.

My phone is doing all the same things from 2015 with only minimal benefits. The only reason we have to upgrade is increased software bloat.

We should actually just have phones that last 15 years now.

WELL. Fast forward to today, when I learned from @empowermentave.bsky.social that @penamerica.bsky.social's Incarcerated Writers Bureau finally launched. And guess what? PEN is taking credit for "facilitating" Derek Trumbo's @prismreports.org column.

Given our experience with @penamerica.bsky.social and what we were hearing from incarcerated writers about how the esteemed literary organization treated them, @prismreports.org launched its Right to Write editorial initiative for incarcerated writers. We have since published dozens of pieces.

But Derek and I loved working together and we decided to continue our work together with absolutely zero support from @penamerica.bsky.social. Derek and I co-wrote pieces together about prison labor, and he launched a column at @prismreports.org about life behind bars.

In 2021, I became a "coach" in @penamerica.bsky.social's IWB & I was paired with Derek Trumbo, who at the time was a writer incarcerated in Kentucky. But after our introduction, the IWB completely fell apart. The team behind the PEN program abruptly left the org, and the IWB never actually launched.

Well, apparently this practice continues! Today, I was alerted by @empowermentave.bsky.social that PEN's Incarcerated Writers Bureau finally launched. The original idea behind the program was to create a pathway for incarcerated writers to publish more regularly with esteemed publications.
