It’s generally assumed that “Moby-Dick” has a canonical start date in December 1841, so there’s a good chance that Ishmael has entered the AME Zion church (then on South Second St, three blocks from the water) and the preacher he sees is Frederick Douglass. 🐋

Hilariously, we have created a commerce model where it’s increasingly impossible to buy something locally today, but you can have nearly anything on earth delivered tomorrow.

I can't explain it, but you know I'm right.

Free transit idea for @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social that’s easier, cheaper to implement, has fewer weird what-ifs, and doesn’t involve the state:

Buy management control of Citibike, expand it citywide (finally), and make that fare-free for residents.

reposted this today because the inverse is also true:

if you abandon trans people right now, you are abandoning civil rights period.

if you can't stand up for trans people when it matters, no one should, or will, ever trust you when the bullseye moves to the next target.
the thing about trans rights is that we fight the civil rights issues of our time. nazi chuds have made this the issue of our time.

it's not more *important* than other civil rights issues, but it is the battleground of the moment, and we have to meet the moment to support everyone's rights.
Centrists bigots and right wingers have this all backward. YOU are the ones constantly bringing up trans issues. I would be happy to not think about this shit every day of my life unless I was talking to or reading something by one of my trans friends and thought of it in passing. SHUT THE FUCK UP

Taking photos and video of law enforcement officers performing their duties in public is our constitutional right.

This includes police, FBI, National Guard troops, ICE agents, and other government officials.

Not really an overstatement to say that the test of a free society is whether or not comedians can make fun of the country's leader on TV without repurcussions.

Stop with the cutesy names like Alligator Alcatraz or the Southern White House or Gulf of America. Stop using the names meant to change your reality. You’re acting like children. Be an adult. It’s not alligator Alcatraz. It’s not a tv show. It’s worse. And it’s damn sure not cute

I was lucky enough to live through the brief window of human history where the internet, while it certainly had dark corners, was mostly a good and helpful tool for humanity. Wikipedia, Reddit, pre-Musk Twitter … they helped.

I think those days have ended.

Police show up in body armor, seemingly ready for war, because communities buy them that equipment and training.

At Finance tonight: $165,500 in grants "to the Police Department for Special Response Team equipment and training"

I hope the committee asks what our "special" response entails.

I think it's important to remember that, while we always can and should do better, Somerville is actually doing remarkably well - both regionally and especially nationally - on being a walkable, bikable, transit friendly city.

Please keep that in mind as you yell at our electeds to do better.

Pope Leo's first sermon and, uh, his using the phrase "be ever more fully a city set upon a hill" and cf'ing it to Rev 21:10 instead of any of the others before saying "many baptized Christians" are "living in a state of practical atheism" is. Well. Shots fired!

Going to continue my years-long streak of not watching politicians talk on tv. I’ll read transcripts of what they say. Not the spin of what people tell me they say. And not the spectacle of the ‘show’.

I’m not a viewer. I’m a citizen. This isn’t entertainment for me.

Does anybody within reach of my voice have a GIS (or similar) dataset that I could use to approximate total square mileage of our rights of way? Looking for data to let me say things like ‘Somerville is 4.4 square miles, 1.1 of that is road, and 0.2 of it is parking.’

Thanks in advance.
