kind of funny there are prob 1,000 major US musicians and every time conservatives need to put up a music artist to counter a mainstream narrative, they put up kid rock. "ok here's kid rock again" for the next 30 years, an octogenarian man in jean shorts rapping something from the 1990s

Feels like the US has spent the last 5+ years on the verge of some kind of secular moral revival that keeps getting channeled into weirdo lifestyle puritanism
Cafes across the U.S. are embracing the low- and no-caffeine lifestyle, with options that are a far cry from dusty tea bags and rewarmed decaf. nyti.ms/3XKlqoj

Please don't accuse people in knitted hats of only wearing their supposed politics if all you're doing is posting, which is basically just another way of wearing your politics. It's a silly thing to attack people over in any case. Using fashion to signal support for ongoing acts of rebellion is good

Feel like there has been a lot of “conspiracy theorists were right” but what actually happened was victims were and that’s much harder to accept for most people
This conspiratorial thinking is actually the easy way out that ignores addressing real, solvable problems that contribute to victim’s deaths. It ignores failures of the justice system, not fictional shadowy figures and assassins, to keep her safe. It ignores how she was punished by the courts

It’s incredibly frustrating to see people spread conspiracies that Epstein survivor Virginia Roberts Giuffre “didn’t really kill herself.” It ignores her allegations of domestic abuse against her husband before she did, actually, die by suicide. It’s a way to minimize how pervasive abuse really is

Sabrina Carpenter being on The Muppet Show makes perfect sense. I think she’s basically a muppet to begin with. Like in the field of contemporary celebs she’s gotta be in like, the top ten of obvious muppets masquerading as people.

If a system produces unjust outcomes time and time again, then we can’t *just* focus on individual cases of injustice. Because there will always be more, and never enough attention to go around for all of them. The entire system has to be reworked and/or abolished.

"[W]e can't move forward from these endless cycles of abuse until we pay attention to victims, empower them to speak up and set agendas, and support them in recovering and thriving after abuse. Right now, we're doing the opposite of all of those things."
I wrote about how the women Epstein and co victimized have been minimized and ignored as individuals even in popular discourse about the very abuse they endured—and how the legal system has punished them and other women, not helped them, for daring to come forward.

Even the most famous victims are silenced
From the Epstein files to Amber Heard, we obsess over victims while denying their own right to speak.

He has said this about every election since 2016, has always been heavy-handed in implying he will under no circumstances concede. An aspiring dictator from the beginning, he hardly ever pretended to believe in democracy. I’ll never understand why so many people averted their eyes from the obvious.

It is really infuriating to see how misogyny really does unite men across the sociopolitical spectrum. And, in so far as the Epstein files go, they sort women into two categories: fuckable or irrelevant. When they near a hint of accountability they complain about not being able to make women prey.

The ASPS has come out against trans youth surgical care.

The AMA then endorsed the ASPS.

Meanwhile, WPATH's president-elect testified on behalf of a detransitioner who won their case.

And hospitals capitulate to Trump.

I write my indictment of the American medical system on trans youth care.
The Cowardice Of American Medicine On Trans Youth Care
After capitulation by hospitals across the country, the ASPS and AMA have both thrown trans kids under the bus on surgical care.

I understand the reasons why it’s more jarring and consequential to see it happen among billionaires, but the kind of shrugging disinterest or impishly approving encouragement of sexual abuse among Epstein’s circle is the same dynamic that happens in less powerful milieus.

they're trying to be coy about salivating over the prospect of raping women, they'll contest that but if pushed to explain, that's exactly what they would describe. forced pregnancy of any kind, by a man or by the state, is gender-based violence

conspiracy theorist thinking breeds conspiracy theories. they can’t shut off this mindset or question it’s legitimacy. for a lot of people the fact that trump is in the epstein files becomes further proof of the conspiracy rather than evidence that their framework of thinking was off.
One of the things bothering me about how people are responding to the Epstein files is that there are tons of conspiracies being created and spread about what’s in them, rather than people just believing the victims like they could have been doing for years now

There’s literally a straight line between Trump, Epstein, and the retaliatory lawsuits against women who came forward with allegations against celebrity men like Amber Heard and Blake Lively. They all even have the same PR folks. And yet people still refuse to see it

At the same time the Epstein Files are reinforcing how protected sexual abusers really are, Neil Gaiman is using the nightmarish sexual violence allegations against him to market his next book. His DARVO defense is the first selling point. Rape culture is everywhere and unavoidable.

I need people to understand that it’s not just Epstein, it’s the entire rape culture that existed before and after him at every socioeconomic level. That’s why Epstein, who I’ve never thought was particularly smart or interesting, was able to pull this all off—he recognized how abuse functions

The fetishization and abuse of girls and young women is just as normalized today as it was when Epstein got started. Look no further than the culture of exploiting child stars, who today are predominantly online influencers, followed by shaming and blaming them for their sexuality as young adults
