The public really needs to understand this. Every university system in the world rests on public funding, there has never been an alternative model at any time in history.

We have universities for literally the same reason that we have roads and armies.
I don't disagree that the US university business model was/is fragile, but surely not for this reason?

There is no society in the history of humanity that has successfully built a good university system without massive govt subsidies. US had already pushed the idea very far.

Seriously, the reaction of plutocrats to the Mamdani campaign — histrionic freakout before the election, with promises to flee the city if he won, followed by a big “never mind” when he did — can teach us a couple of things. — @pkrugman.bsky.social

Those claiming Dems should retreat on racial justice aren't hard-headed realists, they're pushing against the electoral tide rather than leaning into it. The story of Gen Z isn't about racist backlash or red-pilled young men. It's the most racially progressive generation in American history. 🧵

Why would Trump—who allegedly knew of Epstein’s crimes—“spend hours” at a pedophile’s house with an underage victim?

I think we all know the answer.

As many have pointed out, Mamdani didn't stand apart from our trans brothers and sisters. He didn't play the "Gee, gosh, it sure is complicated," milquetoast moderate card. And he crushed.

The way forward is together, not over the bodies of our own.

Can't overstate how fucked up it is that unraveling what is arguably the greatest achievement in the history of humanity is now a motivating issue of one of the two dominant parties in the U.S.
FL is moving forward w/ plan to end all childhood vaccine mandates. Starting with hepatitis B, chickenpox, and the bacteria causing meningitis and pneumonia. Then next year GOP FL legislature is expected to revisit 1977 law re: whooping cough, measles, polio, rubella, mumps, diphtheria, and tetanus.

JD Vance is suggesting that neo-Nazis and the descendents of confederate soldiers have more claim to being part of this nation because they're white than immigrants who believe in the Declaration of Independence.

This kind of blood and soil nationalism is indistinguishable from classic fascism.

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

Not to be too pro technocrat, but it is astounding how much this country depended on the selflessness of like a few hundred thousand highly educated public servants who, for peanuts, made sure our food and medicine and environment etc were safe. And in return these servants were demonized.

Sending people to foreign prisons isn’t a debate about immigration policy. Telling private universities who they must hire and what they must teach isn’t about antisemitism. Destroying the economy thru tariffs isn’t about revitalizing American industry.

It’s all about power and domination.

But the Abrego Garcia case is the crisis moment.
