A LOT of our current idiotic Discourse situation is downstream of the NYT throwing in--and in a ham-handed and oft frankly stupid way--with one faction after another, switching its targets and favored subjects according to what its leadership deemed most prestigious, always trying to stay Relevant.

It's worth reading the whole interview in full. It basically verifies that the NYT has spent the past decade-plus doubling down on top-down narratives for coverage, getting more intense over time.

Sulzberg personally picked & chose whom the news apparatus would target and whom it would kiss up to.
In this in-depth interview Billie Jean Sweeney — a former editor at The New York Times — details how the paper shifted towards openly promoting anti-trans hatred, why this was directed from the very top, how some staff pushed back and the immense damage done by the NYT legitimizing bigotry.

honestly i think that the táriverse concept is as played out as Marvel. it was one thing when they went to a tár concert on Young Sheldon -- really cool crossover -- but i don't know, thematically, why she even owned a rocket launcher in One Battle After Another.
can't believe stranger things season 5 ends with vecna being shoved off the stage of the hawkins philharmonic by none other than hometown conductor lydia tár

The liberal consensus for years was that Palestinians existed outside of liberalism and human rights frameworks and Mamdani, among others, are the byproduct of the underlying shifts in public opinion and the opinion of liberal institutions.

And I think liberals should stop taking the bait and ceding ground on immigration.

Immigration is good. Multiculturalism is good. Free trade is good. Stop being embarrassed to say so.

It is a little funny that some people, they are now mostly still on Twitter, genuinely miss and think it was better when DSA was a glorified Harringtonite book club
No matter where we go from here I cannot believe we, as DSA, in under 10 years of reconstitution, elected a guy to govern the most important city in the world that says in his inaugural speech: “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as a democratic socialist.”

leave it to John Roberts to bring up Lincoln's 1857 speech decrying the majority opinion in Dred Scott - without acknowledging that the real point of the speech was to decry an opinion using originalist methods, and to question the deference due the court

I can't believe we have to deal with Less Wrong idiots and Moldbug in 2026.

I remember making fun of them in 2000s SA alongside the bodybuilding(dot)com forums as being two types of incredible dumbshit.

Also the Hitler genius thing isn't even remotely true, classic "smart guy for dumbasses" idea.
Curtis Yarvin, JD Vance’s friend & ideological influence, ended 2025 by claiming “only Hitler spoke the truth” about “too many subjects” & “Hitler was a genius.”

Extremism isn’t fringe on the right. Once marginal online extremists like Yarvin are influential at the highest levels of government.

The New Year has come,
A fresh and rosy child;
See! he clasps the hand
Of a lady young and wild.

With images by Walter Crane, and verse by his daughter Beatrice, this illustrated series of poems (ca. 1899) personifies the months of the year: https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/crane-months
