It's not 100% clear who's made the decision to remove safety infrastructure - PBOT? Mayor? Council? City Administrators?

Lack of clarity is why people who depend on safe streets to get around PDX are extra worried about this newest car-oriented decision.

Here's a contact list of your Councillors:

this is insane: Washington state is basically doing reverse congestion pricing, taxing sustainable/efficient forms of transportation to subsidize pointless highway widenings.

and this is a state with a democratic trifecta! what is going on here
Taxing buses and e-bikes to fund highway expansion projects is madness. And yet, that's what is being proposed.
If you expect better from the Washington State senate, fill out TCC's action alert right now ⬇️
The Senate transportation budgets contain things we love ($450 million for safety on main street highways!) and others we strongly oppose, like new taxes on buses and e-bikes. Join us in asking legislators to say "no" to these taxes.

Seriously just fucking shut March Madness down
The nations top research universities (R1) are under assault by the Trump administration. Pitts has paused all PhD admissions for next year.

Many R1 schools are also Division 1 NCAA schools.

All SEC, Big 10, ACC, Big 12, Ivy League schools.

Suspend sports and explain it is due to Musk, Trump

One thing that is very noticeable in the Netherlands is the huge amount of elderly or people with mobility issues you see everywhere, all the time. The network of protected cycle tracks, low traffic neighbourhoods and car free streets gives these people so much freedom

Rather than cynically crap on "The Dems" on social media, how about you "get out and push". Get involved with your local party and push them in a better direction. Help people running for the school board or city council. Talk with your elected officials and push them in the direction you want

"According to Meek, the proposal also would run afoul of the concept that each person has an equal vote. It could ensure that one signature in sparse Wheeler County has the same heft as more than 500 signatures in Multnomah County."

Landing a measure on the Oregon ballot could be more time consuming and expensive, under a pair of provisions lawmakers are considering putting before voters next year.

Citizen-driven ballot measures could become more rare under proposals taken up by Oregon lawmakers
Critics of the state's initiative petition system say it gives too much say to the Portland region.

Stop pronouncing it DOGE like we're 16th century Venetians addressing the duke.

Start calling it Dodgy.

dodgy /dŏj′ē/
adjective

Evasive; shifty.
Unsound, unstable, and unreliable.
So risky as to require very deft handling.

I mean, IT'S RIGHT THERE.

Good expert thread on all of the subtle things that bus drivers do that self-driving buses would have to replicate.
Really bad take from where I sit (behind the wheel of a bus) because so much of the skill of an operator relies on human skills like intuiting the intentions of other humans. A surprising fraction of my work is reading faces, body language and gestures.
My personal idea of paradise would be abundant bus services with well-paid contented human drivers.

But the challenge is real. It's hard to hire enough drivers, and expensive to do what's needed to respect their humanity. So I don't think this conversation can be suppressed. 11/11
