Imagine if Dems in the Senate hadn't caved. The House wouldn't be in session rn, the discharge petition wouldn't be signed, people wouldn't have SNAP, govt workers would be RIF'd & the GOP would have some decent talking points. But also online rage addicts would be happier! YMMV!

why would releasing the pedophile club files make him a lame duck president, what are you implying here John
Republican Sen. John Barrasso, the majority whip, doesn’t commit to holding a Senate vote on the bill to release the Epstein files if it passes the House. “We’ll have a discussion about it and make a decision from there.”

And that's always the way, right?

If speaking out usually paid material dividends, everyone would do it.

But in fact, it usually earns punishment. Personally and professionally.

That is a big part of what makes it brave.

People who have the character to be brave now were brave earlier during earlier tests of character.

And aren't in positions of power, because that sort of bravery is seen as disqualifying from power.

The resurfacing of #metoo narratives-- and the stories from those of us whose careers suffered because we spoke out-- gives us hints about why Trump II went the way it has.

The people who would speak out spoke out during Trump I, and were sidelined.

There's a reason the elite is who it is

oh my fucking god he is 100% confusing cadillac insurance plans with people buying cadillacs

"and it's gonna be locked so they can't go out and buy, uh, a cadillac, they can go out and buy health insurance"
Trump on healthcare: "I've had personal talks with some Democrats about paying large amounts of dollars back to the people. This was my idea ... why don't we just pay this money directly to the people of our country and let them buy their own health insurance?"

They were helped by a hugely favorable media environment where many, many people were eager to muddy the waters.
a take which I thought was too basic to write up but I clearly should have written up lol was that one underrated success of the 2024 Trump campaign was to manage to make it *look* like the Kamala campaign was back-to-back culture wars, they did a very good job on that front!

Recall that during the single debate trump had with kamala that she implored the audience to actually watch one of trumps rallies. She and he campaign were very clear eyed on how much sanewashing the media was doing re: trump

all the Dems TV ads I saw before the election were about lower taxes for the middle classes or whatever, all the GOP ads were about mental transphobic stuff, but crucially their way in wasn't "we think X is bad" but "Kamala is obsessed with X and she loooooooves it all", and people fell for it!

part of the change is that his mood appears much lower and less stable (also a symptom, but hard to differentiate from preexisting personality defects) so he probably isn’t feeling like being spontaneous and charismatic but I also don’t think he really can anymore, nor will handlers let him try

the only elements of his old off-script behavior still consistently present now are the constant handshaking and picture taking, which are muscle memory performance elements that don’t require much cognition, and also things he had learned to do decades before he entered politics.

you also notice a lot more of handlers having to consciously mimic him to make his decline stand out less, from Rubio drastically altering his natural walk to match steps when they appear together to Vance mimicking his tone in the unscripted attack on Zelenskyy

occasionally there are flashes of that more playful presentation even now (putting the candy bar on the kid’s Marshmello head on Halloween, for example) but it’s gotten much more uncommon for his handlers to allow him to spontaneously interact with non-politicians in front of cameras

he’s so evil it’s tempting to avoid viewing him as ever having been charismatic, but he used to be able to do bog standard politician things like asking funny questions (“Am I allowed to touch it?” as a young man presents the turkey for pardoning - genuinely funny for the president to ask that!)

the fact that his speaking style is SO odd and distinctive makes him seem deceptively consistent over time because he still has all the same mannerisms and quirks of delivery, but when you compare him to himself just a few years ago you can see how much more he gets lost now when off script

while we’re on the subject of Thanksgivings past, there’s some good unedited walk and body movement footage here after he leaves the podium around 6:13 and goes to mingle with the crowd

much more symmetrical walk (already altered but much less so than now) and actually shows some charm and humor

there’s a lot of the exact same “hot country” verbiage he still uses (unsurprising, even when much younger he constantly created slogans and repeated them ad nauseam) but around 3:14 he tells an actually funny off the cuff story that doesn’t seem to be from his prepared speech

I couldn’t figure out if he’s always called side dishes “surroundings”

this one could be either the brain holes or just that he considers knowing anything about cooking/serving a meal to be for women

but I did find this striking example of how differently he spoke just 5 Thanksgivings ago

the audience for a jonathan martin special about gavin newsom is "people who will take it as evidence that The Democrats aren't to be trusted", which is coincidentally an audience that helps keep jonathan martin's ejaculations and expulsions in print and getting clicks.
